Sarah Ferguson Faces Potential Loss of Honorary Titles Amidst Epstein Scandal Fallout
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is reportedly at risk of losing an honorary membership with The Stationers’ Company, a prestigious London institution with roots stretching back to 1403. The decision comes as councillors in York are preparing to vote on stripping her of the Freedom of the City of York, an honour bestowed upon her and her former husband, Prince Andrew, in recognition of their ties to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Ferguson, aged 66, was granted Honorary Freeman of The Stationers’ Company in 1988, a year after her marriage to Prince Andrew. The honour was given in acknowledgement of her “support and involvement in Company initiatives.” However, recent revelations concerning her past associations with Epstein have prompted the organisation to review its decision.
The Stationers’ Company, which historically governed the book trade and held a monopoly on printing for centuries, has confirmed through its spokesperson that its governing body, the Court, is currently “researching the original honour.” The spokesperson further elaborated that the Court is “drawing the facts together on how we may proceed” regarding Ferguson’s honorary membership. While this indicates a thorough review, the spokesperson denied that it necessarily signals an intention to revoke her membership. The organisation, representing publishing, printing, and digital media industries, has a distinguished history, with Queen Camilla also receiving an Honorary Freeman title last year for her advocacy of literacy.
York Council Considers Revoking Freedom of the City
Simultaneously, the City of York Council is scheduled to hold a vote on a motion proposing the removal of Sarah Ferguson’s Freedom of the City of York honour. This move follows the council’s decision in 2022 to revoke the same honour from Prince Andrew due to his own connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Ferguson and Prince Andrew were initially presented with the Freedom of the City of York as a wedding present during a visit to the city in 1987. The proposal to divest them of this symbolic status has been under consideration since October of the previous year and is the sole item on the agenda for an extraordinary council meeting.
The Freedom of the City of York is a historic honour dating back to the 13th century. While it once carried trade advantages, it is now primarily a symbolic distinction, granting recipients the right to join the Gild of Freemen of York, an organisation involved in the city’s affairs.
The motion before the City of York Council explicitly states: “The Council resolves that, pursuant to Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, the City of York Council withdraws the Honorary Freeman of the City status from Sarah Ferguson, which was conferred upon her in 1987.”
Unearthing Past Connections to Epstein
The renewed scrutiny of Sarah Ferguson’s associations with Jeffrey Epstein intensified following the recent release of further documents related to the financier. These documents reportedly mention Ferguson numerous times, with emails suggesting that Epstein had been providing her with financial support for a considerable period.
One particular email, believed to have been sent in 2009, purportedly shows Ferguson appealing to Epstein for £20,000 to cover her rent, with a landlord threatening to involve the press. Another message, described as effusive, appears to contain a plea for Epstein to “Just marry me,” following a series of compliments. This occurred just a year after Epstein’s conviction for soliciting sex from a minor.
Furthermore, there are suggestions that Ferguson may have involved her children in her interactions with Epstein. In one instance, she is reported to have spoken of her then-19-year-old daughter, Eugenie, returning from a “shagging weekend” in 2010. It is also believed that Ferguson introduced her then-22-year-old goddaughter to Epstein after his release from prison.
In a 2011 email, Ferguson described Epstein as a “steadfast, generous and supreme friend” to her and her family. This message was reportedly sent after Epstein’s conviction in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor, and notably, after Ferguson had publicly acknowledged her own involvement with him as an error of judgment. A spokesperson for Ferguson stated that this particular email was a response to legal threats following her public statements.
Councillor Claire Douglas, the Labour leader of York Council, expressed strong disapproval last October, stating it was “deplorable” for anyone associated with Epstein to hold titles linked to York.
Precedent Set with Prince Andrew
The City of York Council’s decision to consider revoking Ferguson’s honour sets a precedent, as Prince Andrew was indeed stripped of his Freedom of the City honour in 2022. The council at the time cited its commitment to protecting women and girls from violence and abuse as the rationale for removing the title from him.
The Freedom of the City of York is an honour that has been bestowed upon numerous distinguished individuals throughout history, including prominent figures such as the Duke of Wellington, Winston Churchill, and Dame Judi Dench.
Prince Andrew’s own ties to Epstein led to significant repercussions. He was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, following the emergence of emails suggesting he shared confidential documents with Epstein during his tenure as a trade envoy in Asia. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
The fallout from the Epstein scandal has extended to other public figures. Former US ambassador Peter Mandelson was also arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office in a separate investigation. Both men have since been released on bail without charge but remain subjects of ongoing investigations.
Prince Andrew was stripped of all his royal titles in October of the previous year and had already resigned from all public roles in 2020. Queen Elizabeth II removed him from his honorary military and charitable positions in 2022. Earlier in 2022, the former prince reached an out-of-court settlement in a civil sex assault case brought against him by Virginia Giuffre.
