The Science Behind the Perfect Penalty Kick
If tonight’s intense quarter-final between England and Norway goes to penalties, fans can take comfort in knowing that Harry Kane is the ideal player to step up. A recent study has highlighted the effectiveness of his penalty-kicking technique, offering insights into what makes a successful shot.
Researchers from the University of Reading analyzed various penalty methods and found that shots are most effective when they are high and wide. This approach maximizes the chances of scoring by targeting areas of the net where the goalkeeper is less likely to reach. In contrast, “safe” shots—such as the one attempted by Bruno Guimaraes during Brazil’s loss to Norway—tend to be less successful. These safer options often result in the goalkeeper making a save, which ultimately leads to fewer goals.
Professor James Reade, co-author of the study, explained:
“Harry Kane must have a foot like a traction engine. His fantastic goal against Mexico perfectly demonstrated the risk and reward of hitting the corner of the net hard and fast. We’ve seen our captain miss penalties before, but when he steps up you always feel confident he is going to score because he is so good at placing the ball where the keeper can’t reach it. Penalty takers from all teams should be more like Harry Kane and hit the ball high, wide and hard.”
Understanding the Perfect Penalty Kick
To conduct their research, the team analyzed 536 penalty kicks from the UEFA Champions and Europa Leagues. Their findings revealed that players often choose to shoot towards areas of the net where the goalkeeper has a higher chance of making a save. However, this strategy results in a lower overall success rate.
Instead, the researchers recommend aiming for the top corner of the net, which statistically increases the likelihood of scoring. Their analysis showed that for every 100 penalty kicks, players opted for safer shots that resulted in three more kicks on target (forcing the goalkeeper to make a save). Yet, this caution comes at a cost, as it leads to one fewer goal compared to riskier shots aimed at the corners.
Professor Reade added:
“As we’ve seen often at this World Cup, penalty takers would rather look like they nearly scored than risk looking like they missed completely. For the team, missing the target or having the shot saved amounts to the same thing. But for the player, that difference feels huge. Egos are getting in the way of national success.”
Predicting the World Cup Winner
Ahead of the World Cup, Professor Reade’s team conducted a simulation to predict the likely winner. They modeled every match of the 48-team tournament 10,000 times to produce probability estimates for each nation.
According to the model, Argentina has a 24% chance of lifting the trophy, with Spain (13%) and France (12%) close behind. England shares fourth place with Portugal, each with a 9% chance of winning the tournament.
Professor Reade said:
“Argentina come out on top, but what stands out most from this simulation is how tight it is at the summit. France and Spain are virtually indistinguishable in the model, and England aren’t far behind either. It has been 60 years since England last lifted the trophy, and the simulation suggests football could finally be coming home.”
