Extensive Search Underway for Missing Gold Coast Marlin Fisherman
A vast air and sea operation is currently underway, desperately seeking an experienced marlin fisherman who has vanished in waters off the Gold Coast. The 44-year-old Holywell man, a well-regarded figure in the game fishing community, departed the Gold Coast Seaway at 6:30 AM on Thursday. Concerns were raised when he failed to return that evening, prompting police to be notified at 7 PM.
Tragically, his unoccupied vessel was discovered drifting in the early hours of Friday. The boat was located approximately 20 nautical miles east of Burleigh Heads. The discovery of the empty boat, particularly under what were described as ideal sailing conditions, has added a layer of mystery to the unfolding situation.
Acting Senior Sergeant Shannon Gray, the Queensland Police search co-ordinator, confirmed that the search would persist as long as there remains any hope of locating the man alive. The current search efforts are extensive, involving multiple aircraft, helicopters, and numerous vessels. On Saturday, the focus of the operation expanded, shifting south to encompass waters off far-north New South Wales, specifically between Brunswick Heads and Evans Head. Marine Rescue NSW has joined forces with Queensland authorities to bolster the search capabilities.
Clues and Concerns Emerge
The circumstances surrounding the disappearance are perplexing. Senior Sergeant Gray noted that while four life jackets were present on the vessel, only three were found. This detail offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting the missing fisherman may have been wearing a life jacket, thereby increasing his chances of survival. However, the exact sequence of events leading to the boat being found adrift and unoccupied remains unknown.
Senior Sergeant Gray elaborated on the conditions on Friday, stating, “The conditions were really good – the winds were light, there’s not much swell – one to one and a half metres at most, so it was ideal conditions.” He reiterated the missing person’s extensive experience, highlighting that “The missing person is an experienced game fisherman. He’s well known in the industry and has a lot of experience.”
Water police have since towed the man’s boat back to harbour. Initial examinations revealed that the vessel was otherwise in good condition, with only a small amount of water found in the hull. The ignition keys were discovered on a seat in the boat’s cockpit, a seemingly ordinary placement. However, the man’s wallet was found in his car, and his mobile phone has yet to be located, leaving authorities with limited communication and tracking data.

Senior Sergeant Gray confirmed he is in constant communication with them, providing updates on the search progress. “As you can imagine, it’s a very difficult time for them, and we’ll keep updating them on progress as long as the search continues,” he stated.

Friends of the missing man, including fellow members of the game fishing community and industry professionals, have actively joined the search efforts, demonstrating their support and determination to find their colleague and friend.
