New Appointments and Promotions at Makerere University
Makerere University has taken significant steps to enhance its academic and administrative capabilities through a series of new appointments and promotions. These changes come as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to address staffing gaps and improve service delivery across its various departments and faculties.
The appointments and promotions were announced following the continuation of the 788th meeting of the Makerere University Appointments Board, which took place on April 1, 2026. The board approved nine new appointments and fourteen promotions, reflecting a commitment to strengthening the institution’s workforce and academic output.
New Appointments
The newly appointed staff members include a mix of assistant lecturers, lecturers, and technical officers, each selected from different schools, departments, and units within the university. Among the four assistant lecturers appointed are:
- Mr. Nicholas Kainerugaba and Ms. Suzan Habert Sendege, both from the Department of Statistical Methods and Actuarial Sciences.
- Ms. Mary Concepta Nalwanga from the Department of Nursing.
- Dr. Robert Kaduyu from the Department of Surgery at Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS).
Other notable appointments include:
- Dr. Caroline Namanya as lecturer in the Department of Mathematics.
- Mr. Derrick Orishaba as Senior Assistant Technician at the Directorate of Information Communications Technology (DICTS).
- Mr. Martin Egau as Dental Technologist at Makerere University Dental Department under MakCHS.
- Ms. Damalie Mukhaye as Communications Officer in the Office of the Vice Chancellor.
- Mr. Laymon Kalema as Technician in the Department of Immunology and Molecular Biology.
All these new appointments are made on four-year contracts, indicating a long-term commitment to the roles they will fulfill.
Promotions Across Levels
In addition to the new appointments, the board also approved 14 promotions across different levels of academic and administrative positions. These promotions highlight the recognition of merit and experience among the university’s staff.
At the professorial level, three academics were promoted:
- Dr. Joseph Ochieng from the Department of Anatomy.
- Dr. Annettee Olivia Nakimuli from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Dr. Angelo Kakande from the Department of Industrial Art and Applied Design.
At the Associate Professor level, the following individuals were promoted:
- Dr. Joshua Wanyama from Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
- Dr. Venny Mary Nakazibwe from Industrial Art and Applied Design.
- Dr. Timothy Tebenkana from Humanities and Language Education.
- Dr. Muhammed Musoke Kiggundu from Humanities and Language Education.
At the Senior Lecturer level, three staff members received promotions:
- Dr. Laban Musinguzi Kashaija from Social Work and Social Administration in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS).
- Dr. Charlotte Kalungi Mafumbo from History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies.
- Dr. Dominic D.B Makwa from Performing Arts and Film.
At the Lecturer level, the following individuals were promoted:
- Dr. Ivan Bamweyana from Geomatics and Land Management.
- Dr. Candia Douglas Andabati from Planning and Applied Statistics in the School of Statistics and Planning.
- Dr. Diana Rose Abeho from Geomatics and Land Management.
- Dr. Moses Ssekimpi from Humanities and Language Education.
A Personal Perspective
Dr. Muhammed Musoke Kiggundu, who was promoted to Associate Professor, shared his thoughts on the significance of this achievement. He described it as a result of years of hard work and dedication.
“This academic journey is a huge achievement because you go through a lot. Getting the level of a professor at Makerere University is the toughest because there’s so many demands,” he said. “You should have seen through so many students graduate. Those include the undergraduate, of course, in their masters and PhDs as well. So this is not an easy thing because every process you go through is checked and it has to be approved.”
