iMiklomelo kaDakamela Festival Gears Up for Milestone Celebration
Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated iMiklomelo kaDakamela Festival, a multi-day cultural extravaganza set to unfold this year. Organisers are promising an enriched and vibrant programme, weaving together a tapestry of music, traditional activities, sporting events, and immersive cultural experiences. This year’s festival is poised to be particularly special, marking a significant milestone for the popular Amahubo workshops and introducing new dimensions to the already diverse offerings.
Alongside the main festival events, a series of engaging workshops will cater to both schools and the wider community. These sessions aim to equip residents with practical skills, notably focusing on how to generate income by repurposing waste materials, such as plastic bottles. A highlight for many, the beloved Amahubo workshops are set to return, guided by facilitators of considerable renown, promising to impart valuable knowledge and foster creative expression.
Festival attendees, drawn from across Zimbabwe and extending to international visitors from South Africa and Tanzania, can anticipate a captivating array of activities. These include traditional campfire storytelling sessions, expertly led by the local chief, offering a glimpse into ancestral narratives and local lore. Immersive traditional bush dinners will provide a taste of authentic local cuisine, while a unique camping experience will allow guests to connect with the natural surroundings. The sporting calendar is also set to be a drawcard, featuring the much-loved Bosso social soccer match. Adding a new dimension to the athletic offerings, cricket will be introduced to the ’emakhaya’ (rural) setting for the first time, promising a novel experience for participants and spectators alike.
A Milestone Celebration and Royal Attendance
Desmond Ntini, the event coordinator and a key organiser, has confirmed that preparations are progressing exceptionally well. He expressed strong confidence in the smooth execution of the planned programme. “Attendees will, for the first time, experience a cricket match in a rural setting,” Ntini remarked, highlighting the innovative additions to this year’s festival. He also elaborated on the significance of the trademark soccer match, which will see the iconic Highlanders Football Club, affectionately known as Bosso, take on formidable teams such as Nkayi United.
“What also makes this year special is that we are celebrating Bosso at 100,” Ntini continued, underscoring the centenary of the revered football club. “What better way to mark this milestone than in Nkayi during iMiklomelo kaDakamela?” The festival is also set to host distinguished guests, with members of royalty expected to grace the occasion. Notably, Umntwana uThulani from South Africa, who serves as the spokesperson for King Misuzulu, is among the anticipated attendees, adding a significant layer of prestige to the event.
Addressing Funding Challenges for an Expanded Festival
Despite the optimistic outlook and the exciting programme, Ntini acknowledged that the festival is currently navigating funding challenges. This situation has arisen as a direct consequence of the decision to extend the duration of this year’s event. “Our main challenge this year centres on funding, since we have increased the number of days for the festival,” Ntini explained. He further elaborated on the logistical and resource implications: “A large number of people from the koDakamela community and surrounding areas attend the event, and we must cater to them.”
In light of these challenges, an appeal has been made for increased support. “We are, therefore, appealing for more support,” Ntini stated. He also conveyed gratitude for the existing contributions: “At the same time, we remain grateful to our chief sponsor and other partners who continue to support the festival.”
Festival Details and Collaborations
The iMiklomelo kaDakamela Festival is scheduled to take place from April 3 to 6 at the chief’s homestead in the Nkayi district. The list of special guests further enhances the festival’s appeal, with confirmed attendees including Gama Mbokane from Tanzania, Prince Wandile Ngobese, Umntwana waseZibindini uThulani kaGqikazi kaSolomon, and Princess Andile Mabhena from South Africa.
The anticipation for the event is palpable, with individuals like Thembisile Goba expressing their excitement. “I cannot wait to attend the event because it is both exciting and educational,” she shared, reflecting the sentiment of many. Nicola Khoury, the public relations officer for the African Kings Diaspora Alliance, echoed these sentiments, noting the widespread eagerness for the festival. “This year is very exciting. It reflects the chief’s humility and commitment to making the event successful. So many people are counting on this festival, and he is delivering,” Khoury commented.
Adding another layer of cultural richness, Ntini revealed that organisers have entered into a collaboration with the Isintu Festival. This partnership will see the Isintu Festival host a mini-music festival within the broader iMiklomelo kaDakamela programme. Furthermore, the collaboration extends to an empowerment workshop specifically designed for local artists. This workshop will feature Paul Gwala, who is expected to deliver an inspiring motivational talk aimed at equipping and motivating creatives from the community. The Isintu Festival itself is an established international cultural event dedicated to celebrating and promoting Southern African heritage through music, dance, and cultural expression, while simultaneously providing a vital platform for emerging artists.
