Delta Goodrem’s Heartbreaking Eurovision Journey
Delta Goodrem, one of Australia’s most beloved singers, had a heart-wrenching experience at the Eurovision Song Contest. Despite her incredible performance and the support from fans across the country, she fell just short of claiming the coveted title.
Australia was in close competition with Bulgaria throughout the voting process. As the votes came in, it seemed like the nation was on the verge of a historic win. However, in the end, Bulgaria secured the victory, leaving many Australians disappointed.
Delta remained composed during the final moments of the contest, counting down to the end of the voting with her husband, Matthew Copley, by her side. Her reaction was emotional, as she expressed her feelings through an Instagram story. “That’s it,” she said, before moving to her husband and embracing him. She repeated the sentiment, shrugging and gesturing with her hand up in defeat. It appeared that her eyes were misty, and she was holding back tears as she processed the loss.
Australia finished in fourth place with 287 points, behind Romania (296 points), Israel (343 points), and Bulgaria (516 points). While the result was disappointing, it was clear that Delta had made a significant impact on the contest.
Support from Fans and Fellow Artists
Following the results, Delta received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow artists. Dami Im, who placed second in the 2016 Eurovision contest and announced Australia’s votes this year, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. “Delivered the absolute top tier performance..🌙” she wrote, alongside a photo of Delta performing. “Experienced all the emotions with you.. the adrenaline, the ecstasy, the nerves, the highs and lows, all of it. You did Australia proud!” she said.
Singer-songwriter Bella Paige also praised Delta, writing, “DELTA!!! Absolutely amazing! You’ve made Australia so proud ❤️🔥.” One fan declared, “Delta was ROBBED of this win!… This was the best song, vocal and performance in the last decade at Eurovision. She is epic!”
UK TV host Graham Norton, who was on the ground, noted that Australia was the crowd favorite. “If the audience could crown a winner right now, they would give it Australia. I hope her star power doesn’t go against her.”
A Stellar Performance
Delta’s hit song, Eclipse, helped her make it to the Grand Final alongside countries such as Malta, Denmark, Norway, Albania, and Cyprus. For her show-stopping performance, Goodrem wore a gold glittering dress and was on a raising platform as she belted out the song, wowing fans. Pyrotechnics also went off behind her, as she performed to cheers from the crowd. However, it was not enough to clinch victory.
Before jetting off to Vienna to represent Australia in the contest, Delta spoke to nine.com.au in an exclusive chat. She expressed her love for the positivity surrounding her entry. “I love it, I love the passion, the positivity,” she told the outlet. “I’m gonna take all this incredible good energy and vibes with me and fly over to Vienna with it all.”
A History of Close Calls
Delta is not the only Australian representative to come close to winning. Dami Im almost won the crown with her performance of Sound of Silence in 2016, coming in second place. Her journey highlighted the challenges and excitement of representing Australia on the global stage.
As Delta reflects on her experience, the support from fans and the positive energy she carried with her will undoubtedly serve as a reminder of the impact she has made. While the Eurovision title eluded her this time, her performance and dedication have left a lasting impression on audiences and fellow competitors alike.
