Empowering Futures, Greening the Planet: Young Africa’s Transformative Model in Chitungwiza

In the bustling heart of Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe, a profound and inspiring transformation is taking root, skillfully weaving together economic empowerment with a deep commitment to environmental sustainability. What began as a bold vision by Young Africa International in 1997 has blossomed into a vibrant hub for nurturing human potential. Its flagship campus in Chitungwiza, inaugurated in 2021, stands as a testament to this enduring mission. Recently, the centre welcomed a delegation of journalists, offering an exclusive look into its distinctive franchise model. This innovative approach transcends mere vocational training, focusing instead on building sustainable livelihoods, cultivating entrepreneurship, and championing environmental responsibility.

At the core of Young Africa’s remarkable success are the compelling personal narratives of its alumni. Many of these individuals return to the campus, not as learners, but as accomplished professionals who have carved out successful careers. Their journeys underscore the profound impact of the skills and opportunities provided by the institution.

From Resilience to Entrepreneurship: Blessing Katerere’s Inspiring Journey

One such shining example is Blessing Katerere, now a flourishing entrepreneur, who recently revisited the very campus where her path to independence commenced. Having bravely navigated the challenges of an abusive marriage, Blessing enrolled in a Cutting and Designing course in 2005. She credits this decision with not only saving her life but also securing a brighter future for her children.

“I want to encourage young girls, women in abusive marriages, and those struggling to make a living to learn a skill here at Young Africa so they can earn a living,” Blessing shared with conviction. “Look at me—a girl from the rural areas. I have four children, and I am managing to send them to boarding schools on my own through my workshop. From one small sewing machine, I now have five industrial machines—for overlock, jerseys, and more—and I run my own shops. I have bought two cars, I am building a house, and I own stands—all this without a husband. I am truly grateful to Young Africa and proud of myself.”

The Franchise Model: Bridging Skills and Market Demands

Young Africa employs a groundbreaking franchise system to equip its students with skills that are directly applicable to the industry. By integrating established businesses directly onto the campus premises, the centre provides students with invaluable hands-on experience using professional equipment. This immersive environment allows them to interact with real clients, ensuring a smooth and confident transition into the competitive job market.

Nelson Wejeyi, a franchisee specializing in panel beating and spray painting, elaborated on how this unique model opens doors for individuals often overlooked by conventional educational pathways. “I operate my panel beating and spray painting business here while teaching students the trade,” Nelson explained. “Young Africa provides workspace, equipment, and capacity-building support. My role is to train young people, including those from underprivileged backgrounds and slow learners, and equip them with practical skills. I am proud to be part of this initiative.”

The tangible impact of this approach is vividly illustrated by the trajectory of Tinashe Prosper Zvinei. Following the completion of his training in 2020, Tinashe gained crucial industry experience before successfully launching his own enterprise, External Classic Panel Beaters, which is now a fixture at Chikwanha Shopping Centre. “Young Africa changed my life in a big way,” Tinashe stated. “It gave me the skills to earn a living and build a better future.”

The centre offers an extensive array of programmes, meticulously designed to address current market demands. These include:

  • Welding
  • Cookery and Catering
  • Motor Mechanics
  • Carpentry
  • Building
  • Plumbing

Pioneering Sustainability: A Green Vision for Technical Education

Beyond its core focus on skills development, Young Africa is actively positioning itself at the vanguard of sustainability and climate action. The Chitungwiza campus, which encompasses a commercial school, an ICT centre, a wellness hub, and a high school, also serves as a vital testing ground for green innovation.

Leading this crucial environmental initiative is Wadzanai Diana Manyame, a dedicated greening expert committed to embedding environmental consciousness into technical and vocational education. “We are mainstreaming a greening strategy supported by the Nationale Postcode Loterij, aimed at integrating sustainability into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET),” Wadzanai explained. “Our initiatives focus on making operations environmentally friendly while equipping young people with green skills.”

The Biogas Digester: Turning Waste into Opportunity

A particularly noteworthy project is the installation of a 20-cubic-metre biogas digester. This innovative system ingeniously converts organic waste into usable cooking gas. The facility has substantially reduced the campus’s reliance on firewood, thereby playing a significant role in curbing deforestation and mitigating harmful emissions.

“By using biogas, we eliminate short-lived climate pollutants from open fires and prevent methane emissions from organic waste,” Wadzanai elaborated. “Instead, we harness these gases for cooking, reducing our carbon footprint.”

Furthermore, the biogas project serves as a dynamic, hands-on learning platform, providing students with practical training in cutting-edge sustainable technologies. In a remarkable full-circle moment, the biogas digester itself was constructed by Young Africa students – builders, plumbers, and technicians who are now proficient and empowered to implement similar eco-friendly solutions within their own communities.

Young Africa Chitungwiza is powerfully demonstrating a fundamental truth: equipping young people with essential skills can transform individual lives. However, when those skills are imbued with a commitment to sustainability, the impact extends far beyond personal empowerment, contributing to the vital effort of healing and preserving our planet for future generations.
