A Call for Forgiveness and Reconciliation
On the 7th, Jeonnam-Gwangju Gwangju Jeil High School and the Gwangju Jeil High School General Alumni Association held a press conference at the Gwangju Student Independence Movement Memorial History Hall. During the event, they called for leniency towards the baseball team of Seoul Paichai High School. This request came in response to disciplinary actions taken by the Korea Baseball Softball Association on July 1. The association imposed a six-unit-month suspension from national tournaments on Paichai High School’s baseball team after their players were seen chanting “Starbucks, Starbucks, we must go to Starbucks” and “Tank Day” during a game against Gwangju Jeil High School.
A Message of Compassion
Lee Kyu-yeon, the principal of Gwangju Jeil High School, expressed the school’s stance during the press conference. He emphasized the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, stating, “Considering the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation yesterday, we ask that you gather all possible administrative capabilities and wisdom to allow the Paichai High School baseball students to start anew on the field.” He added, “A high school baseball field is both a fierce battleground and a place of education. We urge adults to fulfill their roles.”
An Apology and a Shared Moment
Before the press conference, a group of 86 individuals, including players, staff, and parents from Paichai High School’s baseball team, visited Gwangju Jeil High School to apologize. During this meeting, the principal encouraged the Paichai students, saying, “Hold your heads high and straighten your shoulders. Your future has not yet ended.” Following the meeting, students from both schools visited the National May 18th National Cemetery together to pay their respects.
A Coach’s Plea
Jo Yoon-chae, the coach of Gwangju Jeil High School’s baseball team, voiced his concerns about the suspension. He said, “If they cannot play baseball for six-unit-months, they may never play again. I hope the Paichai High School students can be warmly embraced.” His words highlighted the potential long-term impact of the disciplinary action on the young athletes.
A Statement from the Alumni Association
Hong Kyung-pyo, head of the Gwangju Jeil High School General Alumni Association, addressed the broader implications of the incident. He stated, “The ultimate and non-negotiable goal is not to condemn young students but to restore proper education and justice. We do not want to brand the students who sincerely apologized with a scarlet letter.” He also warned against attempts to impose political meanings on the incident, saying, “What we must guard against most now is the attempt to impose forced political meanings on this incident, divide sides, and incite public anger. Please stop wielding the sword of condemnation privately or defending and amplifying hatred.”

The controversy began on June 29 during the Blue Dragon National High School Baseball Championship. Some Paichai High School players chanted “Starbucks, Starbucks, we must go to Starbucks” and “Tank Day” toward Gwangju Jeil High School’s dugout.
