Xiaomi, a name increasingly synonymous with cutting-edge consumer electronics, has firmly planted its flag in the automotive arena with the introduction of its YU7 GT electric SUV. This newcomer isn’t just another addition to the growing electric vehicle market; it’s arrived with a significant claim to fame: a new SUV lap record at the legendary Nürburgring.
The YU7 GT made its debut in China, and from the outset, its performance credentials have been a major talking point. While initial speculation suggested it might be a more practical, taller variant of the potent SU7 Ultra sedan, Xiaomi has charted a distinct course for its SUV offering, focusing on a blend of performance and SUV utility.
Powertrain and Performance Prowess
Under the sleek exterior, the YU7 GT boasts a dual-motor setup developed in-house by Xiaomi, featuring their ‘V8s Evo’ electric motors. This configuration delivers an impressive combined output of 738kW. The rear motor is the primary powerhouse, generating 450kW and 540Nm of torque, while the front motor contributes a substantial 288kW and 528Nm.
This potent combination translates into blistering acceleration, with Xiaomi claiming a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.92 seconds. In terms of range, the YU7 GT is equipped with a 101.7kWh battery. Under China’s testing protocols, it’s rated to achieve a driving range of 705km on a single charge, a respectable figure for an SUV of this performance calibre.
Engineering for the Track and the Road
Xiaomi hasn’t compromised on the dynamic capabilities of the YU7 GT. Standard models are outfitted with advanced air suspension systems that incorporate continuous damper control, allowing for independent adjustments to ride height and firmness. This is complemented by an electronic limited-slip differential, ensuring optimal power delivery to the wheels.
For stopping power, the YU7 GT features high-performance carbon ceramic brakes. These are paired with formidable Akebono calipers – six-piston units at the front and four-piston units at the rear. The manufacturer claims an impressive stopping distance from 100km/h of just 32.9 metres. Furthermore, the braking system is engineered to withstand demanding use, with the ability to perform ten consecutive stops from 180km/h without significant brake fade.
The Nürburgring Record: A Testament to Engineering
The Nürburgring lap times have become a benchmark for automotive performance, and Xiaomi has leveraged this prestigious circuit to showcase the YU7 GT’s capabilities. Prior to its official launch, Xiaomi released a remarkable Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes and 34.931 seconds. This initial figure was already enough to dethrone the Audi RS Q8, which previously held the SUV record at 7 minutes and 36.698 seconds.
However, Xiaomi didn’t rest on its laurels. Just days later, they announced a significant improvement, smashing their own record by over 12 seconds. The YU7 GT now holds the official SUV lap record at the Nürburgring with an astonishing time of 7 minutes and 22.755 seconds.
It’s important to note that the record-setting vehicle was equipped with an optional, yet-to-be-released Track Package. This package is understood to include enhancements such as wider semi-slick tyres, recalibrated stability and traction control systems, and further upgrades to the braking and suspension components.
Design Enhancements: A Blend of Aggression and Aerodynamics
The YU7 GT distinguishes itself visually from the regular YU7 models with a more aggressive and aerodynamically focused design. Key visual cues include larger front air intakes to feed more air to cooling systems, wider wheel arch flares to accommodate a broader stance, and a more pronounced tailgate spoiler. At the rear, a prominent diffuser aids in aerodynamic efficiency.
Further enhancing its sporty aesthetic are carbon-fibre elements strategically placed on the bonnet vents, rear ducktail spoiler, headlight surrounds, and door mirrors. For those seeking an extra touch of exclusivity, buyers can even opt for badging finished in either carbon-fibre or 24-karat gold.
Interior Luxury and Technology
Inside, the YU7 GT offers a driver-focused environment that blends sportiness with luxury. The cabin features heavily bolstered sports seats with carbon-fibre backing and integrated massage functions, offering 18-way adjustability for optimal comfort. The interior trim is a sophisticated mix of Nappa leather and Alcantara.
Technology is at the forefront, with a large 16.1-inch infotainment display taking centre stage. Replacing traditional instrument clusters, a full-width panoramic display stretches across the base of the windscreen, providing all necessary driving information in a clear and modern format.
Pricing and Global Ambitions
The Xiaomi YU7 GT is priced competitively in the Chinese market, starting at 389,900 yuan (approximately AUD$80,200). The fully optioned model, excluding the yet-to-be-priced Track Package, can reach up to 429,900 yuan (approximately AUD$88,450).
Xiaomi has made it clear that its automotive ambitions extend beyond China. The company has previously confirmed its intention to enter international markets, including Europe, as early as 2027. However, right-hand drive production has not yet been confirmed, which currently rules out an immediate introduction to the Australian market.
