A £1.50 Ticket to Paradise: Celebrating 150 Years of the Settle-Carlisle Railway

One of Britain’s most celebrated and breathtaking railway routes is marking a significant milestone: its 150th anniversary. The Settle-Carlisle line, renowned for its spectacular scenery and engineering marvels, is set to offer a year of festivities and special opportunities for travellers to experience its magic. To commemorate this landmark occasion, thousands of tickets will be available for an astonishingly low price of just £1.50, allowing more people than ever to embark on this unforgettable journey.

This iconic line, connecting Leeds, Settle, and Carlisle, has long captivated the hearts of travellers, both local and international. Its popularity is a testament to the unparalleled natural beauty it traverses, offering passengers panoramic views of the majestic Pennine Hills, the rolling landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, and the serene Eden Valley in Cumbria.

The Settle-Carlisle line is not just about the countryside; it’s also a showcase of remarkable Victorian engineering. A prime example is the world-famous Ribblehead Viaduct. This impressive structure, a quarter of a mile in length and soaring 104 feet into the air, comprises 24 elegant arches and stands as a testament to the ambition and skill of its builders. Its inclusion on the route adds another layer of historical and visual grandeur to the already stunning vistas.

The railway’s exceptional beauty has not gone unnoticed on the global stage. Earlier this year, the esteemed travel guide Lonely Planet recognised the Settle-Carlisle line as one of the top 10 most scenic train trips in Europe, a prestigious accolade that further solidifies its status as a must-visit destination.

The enduring appeal of the Settle-Carlisle line is reflected in its passenger numbers. In the past year, Northern Rail recorded an impressive 995,000 passenger journeys on the route. This figure represents the highest annual total since the COVID-19 pandemic, indicating a strong resurgence in travel and a continued appreciation for this unique railway experience. The peak month for travellers last year was August, which saw a remarkable 96,000 journeys undertaken.

Alex Hornby, Northern’s Commercial and Customer Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the line’s continued success and the upcoming celebrations. “It’s easy to see why this line is so popular, and we’re confident we will see more than 1 million journeys this year,” he stated. Hornby highlighted the ever-changing, breathtaking scenery that unfolds throughout the year and the abundant opportunities for passengers to disembark and explore the charming towns and natural wonders along the way. He also conveyed his delight at the line’s recent recognition by Lonely Planet and his anticipation for the 150th-anniversary festivities.

The Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company, in collaboration with Northern Rail, has orchestrated a comprehensive year of celebrations. Pete Myers, Chair of the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, emphasised the line’s unique role in connecting communities across Yorkshire and Cumbria. He also underscored its value as a sustainable and picturesque mode of transport for visitors wishing to explore the Yorkshire Dales, Westmorland Dales, and the Lake District National Park.

“In our special anniversary year, we are working closely with communities along the line to provide a host of events for visitors and locals to enjoy, and all accessible via our award-winning line,” Myers commented. This collaborative approach ensures that the celebrations are inclusive and offer something for everyone, from railway enthusiasts to families seeking a memorable day out.

A Monumental Undertaking: The Birth of the Settle-Carlisle Line

The construction of the Settle-Carlisle section of the line was a monumental undertaking, completed in 1875 after a challenging and complex engineering project. This ambitious endeavour involved the hard work and dedication of approximately 6,000 workers who toiled to create what is now a national treasure.

The 72-mile route is a testament to their efforts, featuring:

  • 14 Tunnels: Carved through hills and mountains, these tunnels offer a dramatic transition from open landscapes.
  • Over 20 Viaducts: Including the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, these structures showcase impressive architectural feats and provide breathtaking vantage points.

The anniversary year promises a rich tapestry of events, including the highly anticipated chartered steam train journey between Carlisle and York on Monday, May 25th. This special excursion will offer a nostalgic glimpse into the golden age of rail travel, allowing passengers to experience the Settle-Carlisle line in a truly unique and evocative way.

The £1.50 ticket offer is a fantastic incentive to experience this world-class railway. It presents an unparalleled opportunity to witness some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes, appreciate significant historical infrastructure, and participate in the celebration of a line that continues to connect people and places with beauty and efficiency. As the Settle-Carlisle line embarks on its next 150 years, its allure and importance are set to endure.
