Outrage Over ‘Cowardly’ Stamp in NSW Football Sparks Calls for Severe Penalties

A shocking incident during a lower-grade football match in New South Wales has ignited widespread anger and demands for stringent punishment for the player involved. A viral video capturing a deliberate, off-the-ball stamp has left fans furious, with many labelling the perpetrator’s actions as “cowardly” and insisting on heavy penalties.

The unsavoury event occurred during an opening-round clash in the National Premier Leagues (NPL) NSW competition between NWS Spirit and Sutherland Sharks. The incident unfolded in the 69th minute when Spirit forward Callum Kealy was shown a second yellow card and subsequently sent off for stamping on the ankle of Sharks defender Jamie Percevski.

Footage of the incident, which was shared widely on social media platform X, quickly gained traction, amassing over three million views and thousands of comments as supporters expressed their outrage. The replays showed Kealy, who had already received a booking earlier in the game, appearing to strike Percevski from behind. Crucially, the ball was nowhere near either player at the time of the alleged foul. As Percevski fell to the ground in apparent pain, Kealy raised his hands, seemingly in protest, but the replays fueled widespread condemnation.

Football Greats Condemn the Act

Prominent figures within Australian football have been quick to condemn Kealy’s actions. Socceroos legend Robbie Slater was particularly vocal, describing the stamp as “disgusting” and “anti-football.”

“I was disgusted, I’ve rarely seen anything worse – and I’ve seen some terrible things,” Slater stated. “The venom with which he did it, I’m surprised he hasn’t broken his ankle. It’s assault. If you do that off the pitch, you’d get arrested. It just shows a lack of common decency and respect to your fellow player and human being. I’m sorry, but that’s a cowardly act. It’s from behind, the guy can’t protect himself. It could have ended his career.”

Online Fury and Demands for Justice

The reaction online has been overwhelmingly critical, with many users calling for severe repercussions.

  • “Ban this thug for life. It was intentional and premeditated,” one user expressed.

  • Another user fumed, “He’s attempted to break someone’s ankle, I’d be giving the evidence to police.”
  • Some commenters went as far as to suggest that authorities outside of football’s disciplinary system should intervene, demanding the player face arrest and deportation.
  • “Reckless and uncalled for, the NPL is tough, but that crossed the line. Players deserve better protection,” one post read.
  • The call for a “permanent ban and police assault charges” was echoed by several individuals.
  • “This should absolutely be facing sanctions outside of the game,” another user commented.
  • “What a coward. Disgusting. That is anti-football,” a frustrated fan wrote.

Several individuals specifically called for the player to be banned for the entire season, handed over to the police, and even deported from the country, given his UK birthplace.

Amidst the escalating controversy, both Kealy and Percevski have reportedly locked down their social media profiles.

Club and Football NSW Respond

In response to the incident, Spirit FC Chairman Frank Marchi released a statement confirming that Kealy had been stood down from all club activities pending a review.

“Spirit FC is aware of an incident that occurred during Saturday’s match against Sutherland Sharks,” the statement read. “The club has taken immediate action and stood down the player involved from all training and match participation while the matter is reviewed through the Football NSW judicial process. Spirit FC will fully cooperate with Football NSW as this process runs its course. Our thoughts are with Jamie Percevski, and we sincerely hope he is ok. As this matter is now subject to an ongoing judicial process, Spirit FC will be making no further comment at this time.”

Football NSW has officially launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson confirmed, “Football New South Wales is aware of the incident referenced from the weekend’s NPL NSW Men’s match. All matters and incidents from the weekend will be subject to review and no further comment will be made while those reviews are ongoing. Any outcomes will be communicated through the appropriate official channels in due course.”

Calls for Stricter Sanctions Beyond Standard Penalties

The controversy has placed Football NSW under considerable pressure to act decisively. Robbie Slater emphasized that the standard one-match suspension typically issued for a second yellow card would be insufficient.

“Some people are calling for a 10-game ban, but I don’t think that’s enough,” he stated. “He should be gone for the rest of the season. He doesn’t deserve to be playing this season.”

The incident cast a dark shadow over what was already a heated contest between the two clubs, particularly given Percevski’s recent history with Spirit FC, having played for them last season before joining Sutherland under former coach David Perkovic. Despite being reduced to 10 men following Kealy’s dismissal, NWS Spirit managed to secure a 1-0 victory in the match.
