He highlighted that consistent focus on taking wickets is essential for success in the sport. Iftikhar also mentioned that the young players participating in the PCB U-19 skill development camp in Multan are expected to contribute significantly to the future of Pakistan cricket.
Intensive Training for Future Stars
Exactly 31 young cricketers are currently undergoing intensive training at the PCB U-19 skills development camp in Multan. This program aims to prepare them for international-level contests. The camp is scheduled to conclude by the end of August, just before the Pakistan U-19 team’s planned tour of England in September 2026. During this tour, the team will play four One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one four-day match.
Iftikhar, known for his longer bowling spells and command over out-swingers and reverse swing, pointed out that the camp places special emphasis on the mental toughness and physical fitness of the trainees. This approach ensures that the players are not only physically strong but also mentally resilient.
Aiming for International Standards
Shahid Anwar, the head coach, stated that the primary objective of the ongoing camp is to groom talented youngsters into international-standard players capable of representing Pakistan at the highest level. He explained that detailed assessments of each player’s performance are being conducted to identify weaknesses and further polish their strengths. Anwar emphasized that the focus is on helping young cricketers develop a strong foundation in the fundamentals of the game.
According to an official media brief, Pakistan cricket would benefit from a strong pool of talented cricketers in the future, provided the young players continue to work hard with dedication and a willingness to learn.
Specialized Training for Spinners
Zohaib Khan, the spin bowling coach, mentioned that the spinners are being trained on different bowling variations with a focus on accuracy in line and length. He noted that developing a wicket-taking mentality among the spinners remains the top priority. This approach ensures that the spinners are not only technically sound but also effective in taking crucial wickets during matches.
Enhancing Technical Skills and Mental Strength
Mansoor Amjad, the fielding coach, said that the camp aims to enhance both the technical skills and mental strength of the players. He added that the first phase of the camp was focused on a comprehensive assessment of the players’ fielding abilities, while the current phase is dedicated to addressing technical shortcomings and improving overall standards.
Ongoing Preparations for the Tour
The Pakistan Under-19 skills development camp will continue until the last week of August as part of the preparations for the team’s upcoming tour of England. This extended period of training allows the players to refine their skills and gain confidence ahead of their international fixtures. The camp serves as a crucial platform for nurturing young talent and ensuring that they are well-prepared to represent Pakistan on the global stage.
