Petracca Dismisses “Cooking Channel” Exit Rumours, Embraces Gold Coast Lifestyle
Christian Petracca, the high-profile recruit for the Gold Coast Suns, has firmly put to rest any speculation that his departure from the Melbourne Demons was driven by his burgeoning off-field ventures, particularly his popular cooking channel. The AFL premiership player and Norm Smith Medallist, who made the highly anticipated move to the Suns this year under coach Damien Hardwick, stated that such claims are “laughable.” Instead, Petracca believes his embrace of the Queensland coastal lifestyle is already having a positive impact, which he anticipates will translate directly onto the football field as he prepares to bolster an already formidable Suns midfield.
The narrative surrounding the 30-year-old’s shift from Melbourne had previously been coloured by suggestions that he was seeking a move to a more high-profile club to enhance his personal “brand,” heavily associated with his culinary exploits. However, Petracca has been actively engaging with his new teammates, even taking younger players under his wing to impart basic cooking skills. He expressed his bewilderment at the focus on his life away from the game, advocating for players to be celebrated for their diverse interests beyond football.
“This whole ‘Brand Petracca’ … I don’t know where this has come from,” Petracca told reporters. “We should be promoting and celebrating guys having something away from football. The average career length’s four-and-a-half years. It’s important to me and I’ve found my cooking stuff’s had a direct correlation with my performance. Some of the comments about me wanting to leave because of a cooking channel is kind of laughable.”

A Healthier, More Present Petracca on the Gold Coast
Beyond the kitchen, Petracca revealed that his move north has led to a significant improvement in his mental well-being. He attributes this to a more balanced lifestyle, which includes earlier mornings, more time in bed, and a conscious effort to reduce his phone usage.
“Up early, in bed early, off my phone a lot more,” he explained. “I’m outside, fishing, crabbing. It’s the most present and healthiest I’ve felt mentally for quite a while … a great balance between life and footy. It’s been incredible to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.”
This renewed sense of well-being and his proactive approach to life off the field have been noted by his new colleagues. Suns assistant and midfield coach Shaun Grigg commented on Petracca’s arrival, highlighting his humble attitude.
“He doesn’t think he’s the finished product,” Grigg told AAP. “He’s a much-loved figure of the group already. His love of food and cooking brings people together and he’s hosted some of the boys … always looking to do things like that around the club.”
Bolstering a Star-Studded Suns Midfield
Petracca’s arrival is set to inject significant power and experience into a Suns midfield already boasting a wealth of talent. He will join forces with the reigning Brownlow Medallist Matt Rowell, captain Noah Anderson, and the tenacious hard-runner Touk Miller. Adding further depth, silky defender Wil Powell is also expected to spend more time in the engine room this season.
Grigg expressed his optimism about the synergy within the midfield group, emphasizing the collective strength of the players.
“We’ve got a great, selfless midfield group, guys that have been around and are stars,” Grigg stated. “Now it’s about the team balance and his (Petracca’s) strengths are around the stoppages … and he can be penetrating and damaging with his ball use.”
The strategic addition of Petracca, with his proven on-field prowess and newfound off-field balance, positions the Gold Coast Suns as a formidable force in the upcoming AFL season. His ability to contribute both physically and mentally, coupled with his positive influence on team culture, suggests that his move to the Suns is far more than just a change of scenery; it’s a calculated step towards sustained success. The combination of his “brand” and his footballing acumen promises to be a potent mix for the Queensland club.
