The governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended the calm and well-organized process of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the House of Representatives throughout the state.
The leader issued the praise on Saturday during a press interview right after overseeing the APC primary election for Gubio, Kaga, and Magumeri Federal Constituency in Magumeri town.
Thousands of party supporters from the three local government areas gathered at the primary event’s location to greet the governor and other APC officials as the process commenced.
“We have come to observe the primary election in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, which permits agreement among candidates,” Zulum said.
The governor stated that three candidates initially showed willingness to run for the House of Representatives nomination, but two subsequently withdrew in favor of the current legislator, Hon. Usman Zannah.
“We have three candidates competing for the seat in the House of Representatives, but luckily, according to the agreement outlined in our party’s constitution, the All Progressives Congress (APC), two of the contenders withdrew in favor of the current member, Hon. Usman Zannah,” he stated.
“We are present, and the residents of the three local government areas have expressed their backing for the agreed-upon candidate,” the governor mentioned.
He praised Hon. Zannah for his selection and recognized the candidates who withdrew, Hon. Shettima Shehu and Alhaji Mohammed Sanda Ngamdu, calling their decision a sign of party solidarity and political wisdom.
I would like to offer my congratulations to the candidate and those who resigned in his favor,” Zulum stated. “I also wish to thank all APC supporters and the residents of Borno State for facilitating a peaceful election.
The governor emphasized again that the APC’s agreement was optional and not meant to prevent anyone from running for office.
Under the consensus system, the government of Borno State and the party have never made a decision to prevent anyone from running,” he said. “Consensus is a voluntary choice, and anyone who does not want to participate in a consensus election has the right to take part in a direct primary.
The chairman of the APC Primary Elections Committee for Gubio, Kaga, and Magumeri Federal Constituency, Hon. Yuguda Saleh Vungas, stated that party stakeholders and members have agreed to use consensus as the method for the primary process.
He praised Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for creating the favorable conditions for the peaceful and smooth execution of the event.
By means of a voice vote, APC representatives from the three local governments collectively endorsed Hon. Usman Zamna as the agreed-upon candidate. The process was observed by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and APC representatives from the national office.
The governor, Babagana Zulum, was joined by the APC’s agreed-upon gubernatorial candidate, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, and the acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe.
