Deputy President’s Office Denies Officer’s Link to Kitengela Robbery
Nairobi – The office of Kenya’s Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has vehemently denied any affiliation with a police officer arrested in connection with a brazen robbery in Kitengela. The allegations surfaced following the apprehension of four police officers and a civilian, who are accused of targeting a Congolese national in a meticulously planned attack.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 25, involved the alleged assault of Djuma Yasin Mumbele, a Congolese citizen. Mr. Mumbele was reportedly lured into a fraudulent necklace sale, a ruse that resulted in him sustaining injuries to his neck and back.
The elaborate scheme began when the victim, travelling from Namanga to Nairobi, was approached by an individual identified only as Eric. Eric, posing as a facilitator for a necklace sale, convinced Mr. Mumbele to travel to Kitengela to meet a prospective buyer. Upon arrival at the designated meeting point, Mr. Mumbele was directed to a waiting vehicle occupied by two individuals who presented themselves as the buyers.
It was within this vehicle that the alleged robbery took place. The suspects are accused of defrauding Mr. Mumbele of a diamond necklace valued at KSh 247,000. In addition to the necklace, the victim was also reportedly robbed of a significant amount of foreign currency, including 3,000 US dollars, 300 Euros, and KSh 500 in local currency.
A police report filed at the Kileleshwa Police Station detailed the arrests and named the officers involved. Among those apprehended was Samuel Ng’ang’a, who was initially stated as being attached to the Deputy President’s office. The report, citing OB 140/23/03/2026, listed the arrested officers as:
- Lincoln Ashioya (Muungano Police Station, Machakos County)
- Tom Odero Abwoga (Muungano Police Station, Machakos County)
- Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a (Elwak Police Station, reportedly attached to the Office of the Deputy President)
- Perminus Muiruri Kamau (DCI Kitengela)
The report further stated that these officers, along with the civilian suspect Eric (who remains at large), were arrested in connection with the offense of robbery with violence, contrary to Section 295 as read with Section 296 (2) of the penal code.
However, the Deputy President’s office has moved swiftly to refute the claims linking Samuel Ng’ang’a to their institution. In a strongly worded clarification, the office stated that the officer in question was transferred to Elwak Police Station due to disciplinary issues and had not yet reported for duty at his new assignment.
The DP’s office categorically denied that the officer ever served within the Harambee Avenue offices or had any direct working relationship with Deputy President Kindiki. They emphasized that the officer is considered a “rogue element” whose alleged actions are entirely his own and do not reflect the conduct or association of personnel within the Deputy President’s esteemed office. This clarification aims to distance the Deputy President’s office from the criminal activities of the arrested officer and to assure the public of their commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity.
