Educator Suspended Amid Allegations of Homophobic Abuse at South African School
A teacher at Kalahari High School in Kuruman, South Africa, has been placed on precautionary suspension following a disturbing incident involving a Grade 12 pupil. The pupil alleges she was subjected to homophobic remarks, mockery, and physical intimidation by the educator.
The alleged incident occurred on March 13 after the pupil had used the school bathroom. According to her account, the teacher confronted her with deeply offensive language, including calling her a “lousy gay infected with HIV/Aids prostitute.” The pupil further claims she was publicly humiliated in front of her peers, being labelled a “whore who was raised by a whore.” These accusations have left the student feeling shocked and deeply distressed.
The pupil recounted that she attempted to defend herself by retaliating with insults directed at the teacher’s family, which reportedly led to an escalation of the situation. She stated that she was threatened with severe physical violence, with the educator allegedly saying she would “receive the beating of my life” to force her to become heterosexual. This incident is not isolated, as the pupil also revealed that she has frequently been the target of homophobic jokes and body-shaming at the school, being called “Big mamma.” The cumulative effect of these experiences has left her feeling humiliated, unsafe, and profoundly hurt. She emphasized the fundamental expectation that a school environment should be a sanctuary for protection and respect, not a place for mockery, insult, or threats.
Outcry Over Violation of Dignity and Rights
Shaine Griqua, director of the Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre, has strongly condemned the alleged remarks and described the incident as highly concerning.
“The incident involves allegations of verbal abuse, degrading language, homophobic discrimination, body-shaming, public humiliation, and threats of violence. This is deeply troubling and unacceptable,” Griqua stated.
He expressed particular alarm regarding the threats of violence and the alleged comments targeting the pupil’s sexual orientation and HIV status, deeming them a “serious violation of her dignity, rights, and safety.”
Griqua has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter. He stressed the immediate need for the pupil to receive psychosocial support and robust protection against any form of further victimisation, intimidation, or retaliation.
Calls for Accountability and Systemic Change
The Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre has urged for accountability for the individual responsible for the alleged comments. Furthermore, they advocate for the school to implement comprehensive awareness programs and training initiatives. These programs should focus on crucial areas such as human rights, learner protection, anti-bullying strategies, diversity, and inclusion.
“Silence in the face of abuse only deepens harm,” Griqua asserted. He appealed to relevant school authorities, education officials, community leaders, and child protection stakeholders to address this matter with the utmost urgency and seriousness it warrants.
Official Response and Ongoing Investigation
Geoffrey van der Merwe, spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Education, confirmed that the teacher was placed on precautionary suspension effective March 17.
“The investigation is in progress. All relevant witnesses have been interviewed and statements were taken,” van der Merwe reported.
He indicated that the department anticipates the investigation to conclude within the next few weeks. The Labour Relations office met with the pupil’s parents on March 24, assuring them that the pupil is receiving counselling.
Van der Merwe further reiterated that all pupils, including members of the LGBTQI+ community, are entitled to the same protections as any other student, in accordance with their constitutional rights. The department is committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment for all.
