President Lee Jae Myung stated on the 8th, “In the face of an era of great upheaval, we will transform into an ‘innovative pragmatic government’ that is most proactive in safeguarding the lives of the people.”
The president made this remark during a press conference marking his first year in office, held at the Cheong Wa Dae state guest house, adding, “We will continuously evolve into a government that does not hesitate to pursue any policy if it benefits the people’s lives.”
President Lee noted, “Over the past year, we navigated the three crises threatening the lives of the people and the future of the Republic of Korea,” citing the democracy crisis caused by insurrection and martial law, the trade and security crisis stemming from the upheaval of the international order, and the livelihood crisis triggered by the Middle East war.
He continued, “Amid these crises over the past year, we instead confirmed the potential, possibilities, and opportunities of the Republic of Korea,” explaining, “The unprecedented democracy crisis became an opportunity to demonstrate the remarkable resilience of the Korean people, and the geopolitical crisis caused by the upheaval of the international order proved the nation’s outstanding industrial and technological competitiveness.”
President Lee presented four national governance goals. He stated, “We will advance toward becoming a super-gap industrial powerhouse where all citizens and regions equally enjoy the opportunities and benefits of growth,” emphasizing, “Above all, the fruits of growth must not remain confined to specific corporations, regions, or sectors.” He added, “We will also prepare measures to most effectively utilize the excess tax revenue generated by semiconductors.”
Second, he declared, “We will move toward becoming a global diplomatic and security powerhouse that safeguards the peace and pride of all citizens,” vowing, “We will do our utmost to ensure that the valuable diplomatic and security achievements made over the past year—such as the revision of the South Korea-U.S. nuclear agreement, the introduction of nuclear-powered submarines, and the early recovery of operational control authority—bear concrete results.”
He further stated, “We will advance toward a normal society where norms and rules agreed upon by all citizens are firmly upheld,” pledging, “We will strictly punish market-disrupting crimes such as stock price manipulation and real estate crimes that affect people’s livelihoods, and unwaveringly implement structural reforms to dismantle privileges.” Finally, he affirmed, “We will establish a system that prioritizes the lives and safety of the people in all areas of national governance, including finance, welfare, labor, healthcare, public safety, and disaster response.”
