In an age of constant digital bombardment and relentless social connection, a surprising wellness trend is gaining traction: embracing the void. Across the globe, wellness retreats are offering an experience that, at first glance, seems counterintuitive to modern life – absolutely nothing. Participants are checking into luxurious “darkness cabins” for days, sometimes even weeks, where the absence of light, sound, entertainment, and external interaction becomes the primary focus. Meals are discreetly delivered via light-sealed boxes, leaving individuals entirely alone with their thoughts. The ultimate aim, according to one retreat in Poland, is to prompt a profound self-inquiry: “Who am I?”
This radical form of sensory deprivation is drawing in a diverse crowd, from bioengineers and tech moguls to athletes and celebrities. US-based bioengineer Kiana Aran, who specialises in developing technologies for health research, embarked on such a retreat not just for personal discovery, but as a scientific experiment. Despite warnings from some experts about the potential psychological challenges, Aran was driven by a desire to understand the physiological impact of removing all external stimuli.
Equipped with an array of sensors to monitor her sleep patterns, glucose levels, heart rate, blood pressure, and even her microbiome, Aran entered a specially designed cabin in Poland. The elegantly furnished space, built into a hillside, featured soft cushions, a bed, and a small seating area in calming, natural tones.
Initially, the solitude proved to be a welcome luxury. Aran reported a good night’s sleep and a sense of peace from being disconnected from her devices. However, the novelty soon wore off. “By day two, I was just asking myself how I could survive, why time wasn’t passing,” she recounted. The complete disruption of her circadian rhythm meant she lost all sense of day and night, making the experience increasingly difficult by the third day. It was in this profound darkness that her mind began to conjure its own experiences.
An Ancient Practice Reimagined
The phenomenon of darkness retreats has been highlighted as a significant wellness trend for the coming years. High-profile figures have publicly shared their experiences, often with dramatic accounts. NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers spent four days in a darkness retreat contemplating retirement, while crypto founder Charles Hoskinson reportedly cut his retreat short due to “terrifying shadows gnawing at my soul, sleep paralysis demons, and inability to breathe in the cave.” Writer Chris Colin, detailing his own retreat for The New York Times, described being “rattled by the pure chaos” of the visions he encountered, finding the simple act of being alone with himself “overwhelming.”
While the modern iteration of darkness retreats, embraced by athletes and celebrities seeking introspection, is relatively new, the practice of prolonged periods in darkness has deep historical roots. Across various cultures and religions, spending days or even months in dark caves has been a traditional spiritual practice aimed at achieving prayer, enlightenment, and a deeper connection to the divine.
Buddhist monk Kevin Berryman, who practices dark retreats in the Buddhist tradition within Thai caves, acknowledges the appeal of “unplugging and not having any kind of sensory input” in today’s hyper-connected world. However, he cautions that it is an “extreme thing to undertake and can be very psychologically challenging.” Berryman, a PhD candidate in moral psychology at Monash University, also points out the scarcity of scientific research into the benefits and risks associated with these retreats.
Scientific Perspectives and Potential Risks
Neuroscientist Susannah Tye echoes the sentiment regarding the limited scientific literature on prolonged voluntary sensory deprivation. “What we do know is that the body’s exposure to light and dark is critical for regulating a lot of biological systems,” she explains. As an associate professor at the Queensland Brain Institute, Tye suggests that darkness retreats could pose risks, particularly for individuals predisposed to circadian rhythm disruption.
While potential benefits may exist, Tye stresses the need for more rigorous research. She highlights that our fundamental relationship with light and dark underscores “the importance of living in harmony with the environment and making sure that we take care of the basics like getting enough daylight and sleep and exercise and healthy diet.” This is particularly relevant, she adds, in a society that “is constantly interrupting our natural biology.”
Navigating the Inner Landscape
Before entering her “cave,” Aran received guidance from neuropsychologist Dr. Justin Feinstein, whom she refers to as “the God of sensory deprivation.” He advised her to hold her hand in front of her eyes if she experienced frightening hallucinations, as a way to test their reality. Feinstein also cautioned that the brain, in the absence of external stimuli, might generate its own chemical responses, which could be unsettling, and recommended limiting such experiences to a single day.
Aran’s own experience with hallucinations was vivid. She described seeing her mother, late grandmother, and cousin together, watching an iPad. The startling realism of the vision, where they appeared “so alive, so close,” was both exciting and deeply moving. The most profound challenge, she noted, was the complete cessation of time. “Time completely stopped,” she stated.
She persevered through the final two days, driven by her commitment to the experiment. This dedication, she believes, provided valuable insights for improving the sensors used in longitudinal studies, potentially aiding in the “early detection of physiological signals and misalignment before they manifest as disease.”
However, upon emerging from the darkness, Aran’s perspective shifted. The initial scientific objective became secondary to a newfound appreciation for human connection. She described a “compassionate test” that indicated she was “significantly more compassionate compared to before the cave, and I think I’m still like that.”
The most significant realization from her time in isolation was the paramount importance of human relationships. “In the cave I realised that the science I was doing, or the daily activities, none of those mattered if we don’t have people witnessing our life next to us and being surrounded by human beings,” she reflected. This profound insight underscores the potential transformative power of deliberately disconnecting from the external world to reconnect with oneself and with humanity.
