Ko Min-jung Announces Candidacy for Democratic Party Leadership
Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Ko Min-jung officially announced her candidacy for the party leadership election at a convention held on August 17. The announcement came after she held a press conference at the National Assembly’s press center on the same day, where she outlined her vision for the party’s future.
Ko emphasized the importance of creating a young and inclusive Democratic Party that listens to the voices of youth both externally and internally. She stated, “I will ensure that the Democratic Party becomes a ‘Democratic Party for All’ that represents the interests of the majority of the people and gradually improves their lives.” Her goal is to build a party that supports the success of the Lee Jae Myung government while inheriting the achievements of the Moon Jae-in administration, which she believes were undermined by the Yoon Suk-yeol government.
A Call for Responsibility and Change
As the ruling party responsible for the people’s lives alongside the Lee Jae Myung government, Ko acknowledged the infinite responsibility they bear for the daily lives of citizens and the future of South Korea. Reflecting on the recent local elections, she pointed out that the public had issued a stern warning to the Democratic Party, particularly highlighting the disengagement of the 2030 generation.
She criticized the party for being perceived as a “vested interest group that created and neglected disparities,” a “hypocritical force that climbed the social mobility ladder and then kicked it away,” and a “group distant from the people’s lives, repeatedly causing internal conflicts over irrelevant issues while failing to care for the people’s well-being.”
Ko stressed the need for the party to start anew by acknowledging its shortcomings and seeking alternatives in response to the public’s warning. She urged the party to focus on addressing the concerns of the people rather than engaging in power struggles or meaningless debates.
Addressing Internal Conflicts and Promoting Unity
Regarding internal party conflicts, Ko warned that if the party becomes engrossed in power struggles, winning the general election or reclaiming power would become difficult. She called for an end to stigmatizing language and insults, urging the party to acknowledge opponents, communicate, and seek alternatives.
If elected as the party leader, Ko pledged to introduce several initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity and youth engagement. These include a “Youth Party Position Quota System,” which would allocate a certain ratio of central and regional party positions to young members. Additionally, she proposed a “Party Member Deliberation Committee” to ensure thorough discussion in major policy decisions.
Ko also suggested establishing a “Youth Future Committee” directly under the party leader, with the committee chair serving as the central party’s youth deputy leader to facilitate direct communication and discussion with the leader.
A Four-Way Leadership Contest
With Ko’s candidacy, the Democratic Party leadership race has become a four-way contest. Other candidates include former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, former leader Song Young-gil (who announced his candidacy on the same day), and former leader Jung Chung-rae, who is expected to seek re-election.
Ko, the only female candidate in her 40s among the four, was elected as a Supreme Council member at the August 2022 convention. Her campaign highlights a commitment to revitalizing the party and reconnecting with younger generations.
