Addis Ababa, May 16, 2026 — Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated today that the city administration’s strategic emphasis on the industrial sector has led to significant achievements in generating employment and reducing imports.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed unveiled the Gelan Gura Industrial Park, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing mid-to-large scale production and generating employment for thousands of young individuals.
At the gathering, Mayor Adanech mentioned that the reform-oriented government has effectively revitalized the manufacturing industry, supported by fundamental policy changes as part of the Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda.
These collaborative initiatives, fueled by the prominent “Made in Ethiopia” national campaign, are already yielding positive results in the manufacturing sector.
To maintain this momentum, the city government has been offering comprehensive support to local manufacturers, providing essential assistance to increase their production capabilities.
This has allowed for the establishment of market connections and the overcoming of industrial constraints by promoting road, power, and water infrastructure, along with equipment leasing and financing, she mentioned.
Consequently, local producers have increased their production capabilities to meet domestic needs and have also entered export markets, thereby earning crucial foreign exchange for the nation.
The Mayor stated that the production sheds at the Gelan Gura Industrial Park are already operational.
The Mayor stated that the park aims to bring modern industrial technologies and methods to Ethiopia, promoting substantial knowledge exchange and boosting the global competitiveness of local manufacturers.
Additionally, the cluster seeks to encourage the exchange of technology and knowledge across sectors, thereby promoting import replacement and increasing export levels.
The industrial complex is expected to create jobs for over 20,000 residents, Adanech stated, noting that the location offers fully developed, high-quality infrastructure.
The large facility includes asphalt roads that link 116 production facilities, 356 offices, 248 exhibition spaces and storage buildings, sales outlets, along with hotels and restaurants.
