Fatal Accident on Aseseso Hill Reignites Safety Concerns

Aseseso, Eastern Region – A tragic road accident involving a police vehicle on the Somanya–Adukrom highway has once again thrust the perilous Aseseso hill into the spotlight, intensifying calls for immediate and robust safety enhancements. The incident, which resulted in the death of a police officer, underscores the persistent dangers faced by motorists traversing this notorious stretch of road.

The accident occurred on March 21, 2026, when a police Rhino Kia mini truck, carrying three male occupants, reportedly suffered a critical gear lever malfunction while navigating the steep descent of Aseseso hill. The failure led to a catastrophic loss of control, culminating in the fatal crash.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operations

Upon receiving a distress call, personnel from the Kpong Municipal Fire Station were dispatched to the scene with commendable speed. Their swift intervention was crucial in the immediate aftermath of the crash. Firefighters worked diligently to extricate survivors from the mangled wreckage.

Two civilians, who were also occupants of the ill-fated vehicle, were successfully rescued by the emergency services. They were promptly transported to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital to receive urgent medical attention. Tragically, the police driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Medical Assessment and Patient Discharge

Mr. Emmanuel Ashiabi, the Administrator of the Yilo Krobo District Hospital, provided an update on the condition of the rescued individuals. He confirmed that the two injured civilians, aged 53 and 20, received comprehensive treatment for their injuries. Following assessment and care, both patients were later discharged from the hospital, having recovered sufficiently. Mr. Ashiabi highlighted the critical role played by the fire service’s prompt response in ensuring the timely medical care that significantly aided the recovery of the injured.

A History of Tragedy on Aseseso Hill

While the most recent incident is a stark reminder of the immediate dangers, the Aseseso hill has a grim history of similar accidents. For years, residents and regular commuters have voiced persistent appeals for improved safety measures and more stringent vehicle inspection protocols to mitigate the alarming rate of crashes.

The treacherous nature of the terrain, characterized by its steep gradients and sharp curves, has contributed to a disproportionate number of fatalities and serious injuries over time. The current incident serves to amplify these long-standing concerns, placing renewed pressure on authorities to address the systemic issues plaguing the road.

Past incidents serve as a grim testament to the hill’s notoriety:

  • March 2025: A devastating crash involving a bus from Ben Kunadu SDA School occurred between Adukrom and Somanya. This incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several students with injuries, highlighting the vulnerability of school transportation on this route.
  • October 2025: A truck laden with pharmaceutical products overturned on the same stretch of highway. The accident caused a significant spill of its cargo, disrupting traffic and underscoring the potential for widespread damage and hazards.
  • June 2024: Staff members of Koforidua SHTS were involved in another fatal accident at the Aseseso hill, adding to the growing list of tragic events that have claimed lives and caused immeasurable grief.

Renewed Demands for Action

The latest fatal crash has significantly intensified public pressure on governmental and road safety authorities. There are now urgent demands for the implementation of more effective and sustainable safety measures. These appeals range from engineering solutions, such as improved road signage, speed reduction infrastructure, and enhanced lighting, to stricter enforcement of traffic laws and more rigorous vehicle maintenance standards, particularly for commercial and public transport vehicles. The recurring nature of these tragedies necessitates a comprehensive and proactive approach to prevent further loss of life on this dangerous roadway. The community hopes that this latest incident will be the catalyst for meaningful and lasting change.
