Major Traffic Disruption Caused by Overturned Tanker Truck

A serious traffic incident occurred on the Gyeongbu Expressway when a tanker truck overturned following a rear-end collision, leading to significant disruptions and the spillage of a large volume of gasoline. The accident took place in the Seoul-bound lanes, causing traffic control measures to be implemented for over three hours.

According to information from the Gyeongsangbuk-do Fire Headquarters, the collision happened around 4:45 a.m. on the third lane of the Gyeongbu Expressway’s Seoul-bound direction. The location was approximately 70 km from Busan, near Yul-dong in Gyeongju City. A Mercedes-Benz passenger car collided with a 25-ton tanker truck that was moving ahead on the same road.

The impact of the collision caused the Mercedes-Benz to roll over, while the tanker truck also toppled sideways, resulting in injuries to the driver of the tanker. Additionally, an estimated 8,000 liters of the 28,000 liters of gasoline carried by the tanker spilled onto the road. This led to immediate action by fire authorities and other relevant agencies, who used absorbent pads and other materials to contain the spill and prevent further hazards.

Due to the severity of the accident, three out of four lanes on the Seoul-bound section between Gyeongju IC and Seo-Gyeongju IC were temporarily closed. Traffic was gradually restored around 8:03 a.m., after several hours of controlled movement.
