Five people have been confirmed deceased following the collapse of a three-story building under construction in the Durumi 3 area, close to Gudu Market in Abuja, with 10 others rescued alive on Saturday.
Emergency personnel are working to rescue additional individuals who are thought to be buried under the debris at the construction site, situated near Gaduwa Estate in the Gudu District.
At the time this report was submitted, search-and-rescue efforts were being conducted by members of the Federal Fire Service, medical staff, security organizations, and community volunteers.
As per the statement, Wike instructed that individuals who were rescued from the debris receive immediate attention without delay.
“The Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, who was present, stated that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered that all injured individuals receive free medical care,” the statement noted.
The disaster joins earlier structural failures that resulted in deaths within the city.
Reinstated in August 2022, two individuals lost their lives after a structure collapsed in the Kubwa district of the country’s capital.
In July 2024, the city also witnessed a building collapse in Kubwa, where multiple residents became trapped.
