Wests Tigers Face More Injuries as Taylan May’s Season in Doubt
The Wests Tigers are already struggling with a lack of key players, but the situation could worsen after centre Taylan May suffered another shoulder injury that may end his season. The player, who made a return to the field in the middle of 2025 after a long absence, has been a crucial starter for the team since his comeback.
May re-injured his shoulder during the club’s heavy defeat against the Manly Sea Eagles in the magic round. This latest injury has raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the season. The same shoulder was previously injured, and there is a possibility that a reconstruction might be necessary depending on the results of further scans.
Head coach Benji Marshall expressed concern about May’s condition following the match. “Not good, I think it dislocated again, he will have to get a scan, but it could be the season,” Marshall said during his post-match press conference.
Impact on Team Lineup
With May likely out for a significant period, the Tigers may need to adjust their lineup. Jeral Skelton is expected to step into May’s position, while Sunia Turuva could move back to the centres. This shift could help fill the gap left by May’s potential absence.
The team’s challenges are compounded by other injuries. Jock Madden has also been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained against the Sea Eagles. Additionally, halfback Adam Doueihi is already out, which could lead to Latu Fainu starting in the halves for the joint-venture side.
Marshall mentioned that the bye week could provide an opportunity for some players to return. “We get Api back next week, Jahream [Bula] is a chance, Heamasi [Makasini] could be back in the frame, and probably a couple more there too, but having the bye is the first start, have a bit of time off, reset and start again,” he added.
Potential Comebacks and Challenges
If Jahream Bula returns in Round 13, it would be approximately two weeks ahead of schedule. However, Adam Doueihi will still be joined on the sidelines by Samuela Fainu at the very least.
Meanwhile, Alex Twal is expected to miss only a week due to a knee problem that caused him to withdraw from the Manly clash.
Looking Ahead
Despite losing three consecutive matches, the Tigers are aiming to turn things around after their bye week. They will face the struggling Canterbury Bulldogs at Parramatta on May 30. With several players set to return and some new faces stepping in, the team will look to regain momentum and improve their performance on the field.
