A Mother’s Abduction: Savannah Guthrie Grapples with Fear and Guilt
The anguish of a child losing their parent is a profound sorrow, but for television personality Savannah Guthrie, this pain is compounded by a terrifying possibility: that her own public profile and perceived wealth may have inadvertently placed her mother in grave danger. In a deeply emotional interview, Guthrie recounted the harrowing events surrounding her mother Nancy’s abduction and her own struggle to reconcile the reality of the crime with the potential, devastating link to her own life.
Nancy, 84, was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1st. It was Savannah’s brother, Camron, a former military man, who first voiced the chilling suspicion that the motive might be ransom. “He saw right away what this was,” Savannah explained. “He said, ‘I think she’s been kidnapped for ransom.'” The question that immediately followed, one that clearly still haunts Savannah, was: “Do you think, because of me?” Her brother’s hesitant, “Sorry sweetie, yeah, maybe,” confirmed her deepest fears.
Savannah, along with her siblings Camron and Nancy, remains uncertain of the precise catalyst for the abduction. However, the thought that her fame and financial success could have drawn the attention of criminals to her mother’s doorstep is almost too much to bear. “I don’t know that it’s because she’s my mom and somebody thought oh that girl, that lady has money, we could make a quick buck,” she confessed, her voice breaking. The weight of this possibility led to an outpouring of apology, directed not only to her mother but to her entire family. “Too much to bear to think that I brought this to her bedside, that it’s because of me. I just have to say, I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry,” she told Hoda Kotb on NBC’s Today. “I’m sorry to my sister and my brother and my kids and my nephew and Tommy and my brother-in-law, just, like, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry.”

The speculation surrounding her brother-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, and his alleged involvement has added another layer of unbearable pain to the family’s ordeal. Savannah vehemently defended him, stating, “It piles pain upon pain. There are no words. There are no words. I don’t understand, I’ll never understand, and no one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law. No one protected my mom more than my brother. We love her and she is our shining light. She’s our matriarch. She’s all we have.”
A Night of Terror and Disbelief
The disappearance of Nancy has left no trace, save for chilling doorbell camera footage released weeks later. The video depicts a masked figure, clad in black nitrile gloves and armed with a gun, lurking on the doorstep around the time of Nancy’s vanishing.
Savannah recounted the moment she received the devastating news. She was in New York City with Today co-host Carson Daly and their children when her sister Annie called with the urgent message: “No, mom’s missing.” Her husband, Mike, was away on a Christmas gift trip. The initial reaction was a mixture of panic and disbelief.
The Grim Realization
The sisters initially suspected a medical emergency, a common concern given their mother’s health. However, the scene at Nancy’s home quickly dispelled that hope. “Her phone was there and her purse was there and all her things, and it just didn’t make any sense,” Savannah recalled. The presence of her mother’s belongings, coupled with blood drops on the doorstep, painted a far more sinister picture. The police were already on the scene, adding to the chaos and disbelief.

Savannah elaborated on her mother’s physical condition, noting that Nancy’s health was fragile, making it impossible for her to have wandered off. A “good day” for Nancy was one where she could manage a short walk to the mailbox. The family’s initial thought that paramedics might have been involved, perhaps transporting her, was swiftly replaced by the horrifying realization of foul play.
The Terrifying Footage and Demands for Justice
The doorbell camera footage, showing a menacing figure on her mother’s doorstep, is a source of immense terror for Savannah. “It’s just absolutely terrifying. And I can’t imagine that is who she saw standing over her bed. I can’t. It’s too much,” she expressed.

Two ransom notes were received, which Savannah believed to be genuine, prompting her family to respond via video. She acknowledged that other notes sent were likely fake, deeming the act of sending false ransom notes to a grieving family as deeply disturbing.
In an earlier portion of the interview, Savannah made a direct plea for help: “Someone needs to do the right thing and come forward with information to help the investigation.” The emotional toll of the ordeal is immense. “We are in agony,” she told Kotb, revealing that she wakes up nightly, consumed by thoughts of her mother’s suffering. “To think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “In the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought. And I will not hide my face. But she needs to come home now.”
The raw emotion was palpable, with both Savannah and Kotb visibly moved to tears during the broadcast. Kotb has stepped in to host Today during Savannah’s absence, a testament to their enduring friendship and professional bond. Savannah Guthrie, a familiar face on NBC’s morning show since 2012, is anticipated to return to her anchoring duties next month, though her focus remains firmly on the safe return of her beloved mother.
