The Nigerian Police Force has verified the passing of 17 officers after a terrorist incident at a military training center in Buni Yadi, within the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The assault took place during the early morning of May 8, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces Training Academy, where the officers were receiving advanced counter-terrorism and tactical instruction.
As per a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Placid, on Saturday, the assailants carried out a synchronized attack on the building around 1:15 a.m., attacking from various angles.
“The officers, who were receiving specialized operational training at the institution, died when terrorists carried out a coordinated assault on the facility from various angles around 0115hrs,” Placid stated.
Several members of the Nigerian Army were also killed during the defense against the assault.
The Police Inspector-General, Olatunji Disu, referred to the late officers as courageous individuals who showed a deep dedication to national security by taking part in specialized training initiatives.
He offered sympathy to the families of the deceased officers and promised them that their loss would remain remembered.
“The sacrifices made by the late officers will always be remembered,” he stated.
After the incident, the Police Commissioner of Yobe State, Usman Jibrin, went to the training center to express condolences to military officials and those who survived.
He urged trainees who are still in the process of training to stay strong and finish their program in memory of their deceased peers.
“The determination and bravery of the surviving officers are admirable, and they should stay firm in finishing their training,” he stated.
The authorities also stated that work is continuing, in partnership with the armed forces and other security organizations, to locate and prosecute those involved in the attack.
The Force stated that the deceased officers would be recognized for their dedication and sacrifice to the country.
