Art Safari Unveils Expansive New Museum in Bucharest, Championing Romanian Art and Culture

Bucharest is experiencing a significant cultural renaissance with the grand opening of Art Safari’s new museum space in the heart of the city. Located in the vibrant Amzei district, this ambitious project spans an impressive 4,500 square meters and is set to redefine the city’s artistic landscape. The inaugural exhibition season, running from March 26 to July 19, promises a rich tapestry of Romanian artistic talent and a deep dive into the nation’s cultural heritage.

The newly established venue is designed as a multifaceted hub, featuring multiple exhibition pavilions that will showcase a diverse range of artistic expressions. Visitors can anticipate a compelling journey through the works of celebrated Romanian artists such as Nicolae Vermont, a pivotal figure of the Belle Époque era, and contemporary artist Felix Aftene. Furthermore, a dedicated exhibition will pay homage to Romania’s national poet, Mihai Eminescu, exploring his enduring legacy through the lens of visual art.

Ioana Ciocan, Managing Partner of Art Safari, articulated the vision behind this transformative initiative. “For over 10 years, we have been striving to give Bucharest back its charming, forgotten spaces and to actively contribute to its cultural and urban regeneration,” Ciocan stated. “Art Safari New Museum at Amzei 13, developed in partnership with the District 1 City Hall, is a space open to the community where heritage, contemporary art, and education bring people together and reconnect them with the city.” This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to revitalizing urban spaces and fostering a stronger connection between residents and their city’s cultural fabric.

A Journey Through Romanian Artistic Eras

The museum’s structure is thoughtfully curated to offer distinct yet interconnected experiences. The museum pavilion itself is dedicated to exploring the artistic and societal shifts of the Belle Époque period through the works of Nicolae Vermont. Representatives from Art Safari highlighted that this section aims to illuminate the transformations in Romanian art and society during a time of significant urban development and increasing alignment with European cultural trends. This pavilion serves as a window into a pivotal era of Romanian history and its artistic output.

Complementing this, a separate historical pavilion delves into the multifaceted ways in which Mihai Eminescu has been depicted in Romanian art over more than a century. This exhibition is a remarkable assemblage of works by various artists from different periods, offering a comprehensive visual dialogue with the national poet’s enduring influence. It provides a unique opportunity to witness how Eminescu’s persona and literary contributions have inspired generations of artists.

Contemporary Voices and Global Perspectives

The contemporary pavilion offers a dynamic platform for current artistic voices. Felix Aftene presents an engaging visual “journal,” a collection that thoughtfully interweaves works from different phases of his artistic career. This personal exhibition is further enriched by the inclusion of his personal objects and biographical elements, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into the artist’s life and creative process.

Beyond its focus on Romanian artists, the Art Safari New Museum also embraces international perspectives. The exhibition program includes captivating international installations designed to provoke thought and foster engagement. Among these is a participatory project by German artist Karoline Babette Kaiser, inviting the audience to become active participants in the artistic experience. Additionally, a poignant work by Ukrainian artist Anastasiia Lisnycha addresses themes of community and the ever-shifting realities of the world, reflecting contemporary global concerns.

Beyond Exhibitions: A Hub for Community and Education

Art Safari’s new space is conceived as more than just an exhibition venue; it is envisioned as a vibrant community hub. The program is designed to be inclusive and engaging, offering a wide array of activities for all ages. These include:

  • Guided Tours: Expert-led tours will provide deeper insights into the exhibitions and artistic contexts.
  • Workshops: Hands-on workshops will offer opportunities for creative exploration and skill development.
  • Educational Activities: Programs tailored for students and the general public will foster a greater understanding and appreciation of art and culture.
  • Cultural Events: A diverse calendar of events will feature performances, lectures, and discussions, further enriching the cultural dialogue.
  • Interactive Formats: The museum is committed to innovative programming, including interactive experiences that artfully blend artistic appreciation with leisure and entertainment.

This holistic approach ensures that the Art Safari New Museum at Amzei 13 will be a dynamic and essential destination for art lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and the wider Bucharest community, fostering creativity, learning, and connection.
