Nation Commemorates Independence and National Day with Solemnity and National Pride

The nation is observing its Independence and National Day with a profound sense of solemnity and national pride, honouring the sacrifices of the martyrs of the Liberation War. This significant day commemorates the formal commencement of the armed struggle for national independence in the early hours of March 26, following the brutal crackdown on unarmed Bengalis on the preceding “black night” of March 25. Although Bangladesh achieved its cherished independence on December 16, 1971, after a grueling nine-month War of Liberation that claimed the lives of three million people and saw the violation of two hundred thousand women, March 26 remains the pivotal date signifying the dawn of freedom.

The day is a national public holiday, marked by an extensive array of programmes organised at the national level. The celebrations began at dawn with a 31-gun salute echoing across the country, including the capital city of Dhaka.

National Parade and Presidential Tribute

A significant event scheduled for the day is a grand parade and flypast at the National Parade Square, commencing at 9 a.m. This spectacle is designed to mark Independence and National Day with fitting grandeur. Both the President and the Prime Minister are expected to grace this event with their presence.

Earlier in the morning, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid their solemn respects by laying wreaths at the National Memorial. This deeply symbolic act served as a profound tribute to the memories of those who bravely sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War. Following their lead, families of gallantry award winners, war-wounded freedom fighters, and other brave freedom fighters, under the guidance of the Liberation War Affairs Minister, also laid wreaths, further extending the nation’s gratitude.

The solemnity of the occasion is further amplified by the participation of people from all strata of society. Foreign diplomats, political leaders, and representatives from various social, cultural, and professional bodies are also laying wreaths at the National Memorial, underscoring the international recognition and national unity surrounding this important day.

National Symbols and Patriotic Messages

Across the nation, the national flag is being hoisted atop all government, semi-government, autonomous, and private buildings, a visual testament to the country’s sovereignty. The national anthem will be performed in unison at all divisions, districts, and upazilas, fostering a collective sense of national identity. Student rallies and parades are also being organised, instilling the spirit of patriotism in the younger generation.

Both the President and the Prime Minister have issued separate messages for the occasion. In a message delivered on Wednesday, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged the citizens to uphold the spirit of national unity, mutual tolerance, and patriotism. He emphasized that these values are crucial for accelerating the nation’s development and building a prosperous future. The Prime Minister also unveiled a commemorative postage stamp on Wednesday, specifically designed to mark the Independence and National Day.

Media and Cultural Observance

The national media is playing a pivotal role in commemorating the day. National dailies have published special supplements dedicated to the significance of Independence and National Day. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and various private radio and television channels are broadcasting special programmes that highlight the historical importance and spirit of the day.

Furthermore, different political parties, alongside socio-cultural and professional organisations, have meticulously planned and are executing elaborate programmes to observe the day in a manner that befits its historical importance.

Public Access and Recreational Activities

In a unique initiative to foster national pride and connect citizens with the country’s maritime strength, ships of the Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard are open to visitors. This open-door policy is in effect at major rivers and ports, including Chattogram Port, Mongla Port, and Payra Port, as well as river terminals such as Sadarghat, Pagla Ghat, and Barishal Launch Terminal. Visitors can explore these vessels from 9 a.m. until sunset. Coast Guard vessels are also accessible to the public at Chandpur and Munshiganj launch ghats.

The spirit of celebration extends to sports and entertainment. Sports events, including football matches, T-20 cricket tournaments, kabaddi, and traditional ha-du-du games, are being organised at district and upazila levels. Cinema halls across the country are offering free screenings of films based on the Liberation War, providing a poignant cinematic journey into the nation’s struggle for freedom. Government and private museums are also open to visitors without charge throughout the day, allowing for deeper historical exploration. Recreational centres for children are also operating with open access.

Cultural programmes are being staged at tourist spots nationwide, adding a vibrant artistic dimension to the national commemorations.

Spiritual Observance and Humanitarian Efforts

Special prayers are being offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas, and other places of worship. These prayers are dedicated to seeking eternal peace for the martyred freedom fighters, wishing good health for the living freedom fighters, and praying for the continued progress and prosperity of the nation.

In a gesture of compassion and national solidarity, special meals are being arranged at government hospitals, prisons, rehabilitation centres, orphanages, disability welfare centres, and old-age homes across the country. This initiative ensures that all segments of society can partake in the spirit of the day.

Austerity Measures for Energy Conservation

In line with austerity measures and in response to concerns over a potential energy crisis, the government has made the decision not to implement decorative illumination across the country for this year’s Independence Day celebrations. This announcement was made by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on March 8, following a preparatory meeting concerning law and order. The move is intended to prevent any potential power shortages and promote electricity conservation during the current economic climate.
