Reclaiming ‘Me’: A Solo Sojourn for a Postpartum Mum
For the past two and a half years, the question “What do I want?” has been a distant whisper, drowned out by the constant, urgent chorus of a mother’s needs. How can I be the best mum to my son? How can I maximise my precious days at home? And, the perpetual juggling act – how do I possibly manage work, household chores, and maintain some semblance of a social life? This relentless cycle of giving meant my own cup was running on empty. It was time for a radical shift, a deliberate step away from the beautiful chaos of motherhood to reclaim a piece of myself.
This wasn’t just a holiday; it was a mission. My criteria for this much-needed escape were refreshingly simple: somewhere relatively close, undeniably luxurious, rich in culture, and crucially, a destination that demanded minimal decision-making from me. Singapore, with its reputation for efficiency and a vibrant urban landscape, fit the bill perfectly.

Leaving my family for the first time in over two years was a daunting prospect. The anxieties were real, a buzzing swarm of “what ifs.” Would the house fall apart? Would my son resent my absence? Would they, perhaps, be perfectly fine without me? The thought was almost as unsettling as the idea of being away. Yet, the need for change was paramount. I craved the simple, almost forgotten luxuries: a full night’s sleep, a leisurely solo bedtime routine, and mornings unburdened by immediate responsibility. The logistics of travel, however, quickly overshadowed the excitement, a cascade of irrational, anxiety-driven questions about packing, passports, and airport timings – clear indicators that I was teetering on the edge of exhaustion.
My chosen sanctuary was the COMO Metropolitan Singapore. This hotel wasn’t just a place to stay; it was a carefully curated haven designed to facilitate a much-needed reset.

Nestled amidst the vibrant energy of the city, the hotel offered a rooftop pool, the serene COMO Shambhala wellness centre, and immediate access to world-class shopping and dining. Within a five-minute radius, everything I could possibly need was at my fingertips. Upon arrival, after an eight-hour flight and the embrace of Singapore’s humid warmth, I was met with the warmest of welcomes. My luggage vanished to my room, leaving me free to focus solely on one thing: myself.
The first night, as anticipated, was the most challenging. The luxurious surroundings couldn’t entirely quell the pang of separation, the ache of missing my son’s comforting bedtime cuddles and the gentle mornings spent snuggled before the day’s demands began. To combat this, I ventured out, eager to immerse myself in what Singapore had to offer.

I missed my son terribly. But as the hours ticked by, and I found myself wandering down a bustling Orchard Road, surrounded by the neon lights and shifting crowds, I noticed something else.
It was then, amidst the dazzling neon and the ebb and flow of Orchard Road’s crowds, that a different kind of longing began to surface. I missed me. I missed the quiet solitude, the freedom to ask myself, “What do I want to do?” I missed the thrill of my own adventurous spirit, the joy of exploring uncharted paths without a predetermined destination. For the first time in years, my actions weren’t dictated by efficiency or a ten-step plan. It was pure, unadulterated spontaneity, a refreshing departure from the meticulous planning of my daily life. This trip to Singapore wasn’t an escape from motherhood, but a vital, revitalising breath of fresh air, an opportunity to reconnect with the woman I was before the constant demands of parenting took precedence. I rediscovered my love for lingering in shops, for capturing fleeting moments with my camera, and for the simple pleasure of sleeping in. I embraced the comfort of casual clothes, the ease of eating in front of the television, and the indulgence of going to bed with the day’s makeup still on.

These small, often overlooked comforts became the cornerstones of my rejuvenation. For one glorious week, I felt an overwhelming sense of lightness, a welcome pause from the relentless pressure to always be “on.”
My primary goal upon arrival was to tackle the pervasive sleep deprivation that had become my constant companion. Booking the COMO Metropolitan Sleep Dreams package felt like a necessary indulgence, a commitment to a holistic mind-body reset rather than just a comfortable bed.
The package included an innovative SleepHub device, utilising neuroscience-backed sound waves to promote deep, restorative sleep, alongside a bespoke COMO Shambhala sleep kit. For a mum running on fumes for what felt like 900 days, the signature sleepwear and the all-encompassing technology were instrumental in quieting my hyper-vigilant maternal brain. The program also offered the invaluable option of consulting with a sleep specialist, providing a clear path towards reclaiming my sleep.

Beyond sleep, I fully immersed myself in the offerings of the COMO Shambhala wellness centre. Daily gym sessions, the invigorating challenge of contrast therapy, and restorative time in the red light therapy room were all part of my determined effort to realign my body and mind. I understood that to be the best mother and partner I could be, I first needed to rescue myself from the encroaching maternal exhaustion.
As dusk settled, the second phase of my reset commenced. Singapore transformed after dark, a spectacle best captured through the lens of my camera. From the ethereal glow of the neon trees at Gardens by the Bay to the mesmerising Spectra light and water show at Marina Bay Sands, the city pulsated with life and energy.

My sensory awakening extended to Singapore’s diverse culinary landscape. One evening, I delved into the vibrant, unpretentious atmosphere of a traditional hawker centre, savouring authentic local flavours. The next, I ascended to the third floor of COMO Metropolitan to experience COTE Singapore, an elevated Korean steakhouse that masterfully blended the convivial fun of tabletop grilling with an air of sophisticated luxury. This allowed for indulgent dining without ever leaving the comfort of my hotel.
From the bustling energy of street food stalls to the intimate charm of cocktail lounges tucked away in heritage shophouses, Singapore offered a captivating tapestry of experiences. It was an ultimate breath of fresh air, leaving me yearning for more.

Ultimately, this solo journey was about finding myself again. By honouring my body and mind, I seized the opportunity to nurture myself, to care for my own needs with the same fierce devotion I extended to my family. It was a profound realisation that I, too, am worthy of that same level of care and attention.
