She cites the example of a lifting machine designed to assist residents getting out of bed or off the floor. The intention was to ease the physical burden on carers, but the reception from residents was far from enthusiastic. “No one wanted to go in it – they were frightened,” she recalls. “Frightened of the size, of being lifted that high.” This highlights a crucial disconnect between technological capability and human comfort and acceptance.

While acknowledging efforts to develop robots capable of more empathetic interactions, such as one designed with soft skin to offer a hug, she concludes, “But most robots give not a lot of emotional response.” The true challenge lies in harnessing technology as a partner to human care, not as a replacement for it.
