AI’s Cruel Deception: Deepfake Grief Exploits Tragic Loss, Fouling Thousands
The digital landscape has once again been marred by a disturbing exploitation of public grief, as a sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) generated video, falsely presented as a final message from the recently deceased television personality Mel Schilling, has gone viral, deceiving thousands of fans worldwide. The fabricated clip, featuring a synthesized voice mimicking Schilling’s, surfaced mere hours after the confirmation of her passing, sparking outrage among those who recognise its callous nature and widespread credulity among others.
Schilling, an Australian psychologist who rose to prominence as a dating expert on the reality television show Married At First Sight, died at the age of 54. Her death followed a courageous battle with bowel cancer, which had tragically spread to her brain. She had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023, undergoing treatment in the UK while filming Married At First Sight UK. Although initial surgeries to remove a lemon-sized tumour were successful, and she had received an all-clear, the cancer returned, spreading to her lungs in February 2024 and reaching her brain by Christmas 2025, as she had revealed shortly before her death.
Within hours of the official announcement of her passing, a TikTok video emerged, purportedly a posthumous message from Schilling released by her family. This AI-generated audio, overlaid on a montage of her personal photographs, television appearances, and magazine covers, delivered a poignant, yet entirely fabricated, farewell.
The synthesized voice stated: “If you are watching this video it means there is nothing more that can be done for me.” The AI continued, weaving in intimate, yet false, details about her life, including references to her husband, Gareth Brisbane, and their daughter, Maddie. “I spent more than 20 years studying human emotions and relationships. The most successful case of my life was my beloved Gareth,” the fake message claimed. “So Gareth please continue our story – I know you will feel pain but please allow yourself to be happy again.” The AI also addressed her supposed daughter: “And to my precious daughter, you are the miracle your father and I received after enduring the pain of miscarriage and going through IVF. You are the achievement I am most proud of in my life – please live boldly and without hesitation for your mother.” The artificial message concluded with advice for her fans: “Finally, to everyone who has ever watched Married at First Sight or heard me speak, take every signal your body sends you seriously.”
The inclusion of these deeply personal, albeit fabricated, details lent the video an air of authenticity for many, leading to its rapid dissemination across social media platforms. The TikTok account where the video first appeared has garnered over 562,000 views and thousands of comments from grieving fans. Alarmingly, this account also features similar AI-generated videos, including one falsely claiming to be a final message from the late American actor James Van Der Beek, suggesting a pattern of exploiting public figures’ deaths for engagement and potential financial gain through advertising revenue generated by the high view counts.
Backlash and Deception: Fans React to the Deepfake
The emergence of the AI-generated video has ignited a significant backlash from outraged viewers and fans who recognise the profound disrespect and ethical bankruptcy of such a deception. Comments flooded social media platforms, with one user expressing, “How disrespectful to Mel. This is poor taste and has no place here.” Another commenter voiced a growing societal concern: “This is disgraceful. What is wrong with people? I feel like I cannot believe anything online anymore.”
However, the effectiveness of the deepfake also meant that a considerable number of individuals were genuinely taken in by the fabricated message, sharing their heartfelt grief in response. “Oh Mel, so, so sorry – absolutely gutted for you,” read one comment, while another stated, “This is so sad – you are beautiful inside and out.” The extent of the deception is further highlighted by instances where fans, believing the video to be authentic, unwittingly reposted it with their own emotional reactions, including videos of themselves weeping while listening to the AI’s narration.
