Toyota’s Rising Star: Sami Pajari’s Quiet Ascent in the World Rally Championship

The 2024 World Rally Championship season has been a spectacle of established stars and emerging talents, with Oliver Solberg, Elfyn Evans, and Takamoto Katsuta all capturing significant victories. However, beneath the prominent headlines, Toyota’s young Finnish driver, Sami Pajari, is steadily carving out his reputation as the team’s next potential rallying sensation. Toyota’s current WRC driver lineup is exceptionally strong, boasting a roster where all five regular drivers – Evans, Solberg, Katsuta, Pajari, and the part-time, reigning world champion Sebastien Ogier – have either secured wins or achieved podium finishes in the opening three events of the season.

New recruit Solberg made an immediate impact, dazzling the WRC field with a remarkable victory in Monte Carlo in January. Elfyn Evans demonstrated his enduring class with a commanding win at Rally Sweden, while Takamoto Katsuta navigated the formidable challenges of the Safari Rally Kenya to claim his memorable maiden WRC triumph.

Amidst these headline-grabbing performances, Sami Pajari has been diligently making significant progress. Now in only his second full season as a factory Rally1 driver, Pajari’s journey has been one of consistent improvement. Despite not securing a seat in Toyota’s primary Rally1 team following the off-season addition of 2025 WRC2 champion Oliver Solberg, Pajari has consistently delivered impressive results that warrant significant attention.

While a maiden WRC victory remains an aspiration, Pajari has demonstrated remarkable consistency. Over the last ten WRC events, he has finished within the top seven on nine occasions, including three podium appearances. His performance at the Saudi Arabia finale last year was particularly noteworthy, as he even contended for the outright win.

Earlier this month, Pajari delivered what many consider his finest drive to date, securing a third-place finish in the grueling Safari Rally Kenya. This podium success followed a morale-boosting third-place finish in Sweden, after an unfortunate retirement in the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally.

His performance in Kenya was exceptional, with Pajari claiming five stage wins throughout the rally. He was only outmatched in stage wins by the vastly experienced two-time Safari winner, Sebastien Ogier, who secured seven fastest times. Pajari’s speed and capability on the demanding Kenyan stages even caught the eye of his more seasoned Toyota teammates, who were reportedly keen to study his onboard footage for insights and driving techniques.

“It is nice to see that some people are taking some advice or tips from my driving, so it shows that we are doing something well,” commented Pajari on his growing influence.

The performances in Sweden and Kenya have already surpassed his entire stage win tally from the 2023 season. Following these back-to-back WRC podium finishes, a career first for the 24-year-old, Pajari expresses a growing confidence in his ability to regularly challenge the WRC’s elite drivers.

“It’s going quite well recently, and I must be super happy for that. At the same time, I still feel there is room to improve and we have finished third three times now so there is two more steps to do and I hope at some point we can claim those places as well,” Pajari stated. He recently demonstrated his commitment to development by participating in testing for Toyota’s 2027 prototype car in Portugal.

Reflecting on his recent success, Pajari added, “This [Safari Rally Kenya] is a really unique rally and of course it is really nice to finish on the podium, but also at the same time we had five stage wins, so it was not only slowly getting through the race, we had some quick pace too. I’m happy from both sides.”

He further elaborated on his competitive mindset: “Of course, we are there to fight with anybody and we have taken some stage wins on quite many different types of rallies, and I think we are getting to the place where we can say we can basically fight with anyone in any condition. We are there to not only fight with the team-mates but in general it is sport, so we try to do the best we can otherwise we wouldn’t be here.”

Following the demanding and unforgiving conditions of the Kenyan gravel, Pajari’s next challenge will be the technical and precise asphalt roads of Croatia, scheduled for next month. This transition will offer another significant test of his adaptability and skill across different rally disciplines.
