Unsung Heroes: Fremantle and West Coast Stars Flying Under the Radar in 2026

As the 2026 AFL season unfolds, the Fremantle Dockers are proving to be a formidable force, building on an impressive run that includes a hard-fought battle against Collingwood. Meanwhile, the West Coast Eagles, despite a challenging start to the year, may be on the cusp of turning their fortunes around. While the spotlight often shines on the undeniable superstars of the game, every successful team is built on the contributions of those players who consistently perform without fanfare. These are the athletes who put in the hard yards, execute crucial plays, and embody team spirit, often without the widespread recognition they deserve.

Western Australian football boasts a wealth of talent, and this season is no exception. To shed light on these often-overlooked contributors, leading Western Australian sports journalist Digby Beacham recently shared his insights on The Outer Wing, a popular segment on Zero Hanger. Beacham has meticulously ranked his top five most underrated players from WA who are making a significant impact this season.

Honourable Mention: Reuben Ginbey (West Coast Eagles)

Before diving into the main list, Beacham felt compelled to acknowledge West Coast’s Reuben Ginbey. While not included in the top five, it’s not because Ginbey is unheralded, but rather the opposite. Beacham believes Ginbey is precisely where he should be in terms of recognition.

“I’m not overlooking him,” Beacham explained. “I’m just regarding him as a player who should be rated, and I think he is rated within the football industry.” This suggests Ginbey’s consistent performances are already noted by those who matter most – his peers and coaching staff.

Corey Wagner (Fremantle Dockers)

Securing a spot on Beacham’s list is Fremantle’s Corey Wagner, a player described as a true “jack of all trades.” Beacham lauded Wagner’s reliability and his evident growth within the AFL system over the past one to two years.

“I think what we’ve been seeing from Wagner in the last 12-24 months is a player who is now comfortable in the AFL system, and he does a lot right for Fremantle,” Beacham stated. His ability to contribute across various facets of the game makes him an invaluable, if sometimes understated, asset for the Dockers.

Tom McCarthy (West Coast Eagles)

The 2026 Mid-Season Draft marked a significant milestone for West Coast’s Tom McCarthy, with his inclusion in this list coming a year after his selection. McCarthy has been diligently working to prove his worth and impact for the Eagles.

Beacham highlighted McCarthy’s immediate influence and creative flair. “He was able to have an impact straight away,” Beacham noted. “He’s creative, he uses the ball well, and he’s getting better in contests.” His development suggests he is becoming a more prominent figure in the Eagles’ midfield.

Bailey Williams (West Coast Eagles)

The West Coast Eagles’ ruckman, Bailey Williams, has earned a coveted position on Beacham’s podium thanks to his rapidly improving statistics and impressive development curve. The numbers speak for themselves, showcasing a dramatic uplift in his recent performances.

“In his last two weeks, he’s had 36 possessions, 69 hit-outs, I think he’s kicked three goals, and he’s got fifteen coaches’ votes,” Beacham reported. He acknowledged that Williams might be receiving more recognition than he initially thought, but the sheer scale of his improvement is undeniable. “So maybe he is being rated, and this is a flaw from me. But Bailey Williams, from where he was six weeks ago… it’s been a quantum leap.”

Karl Worner (Fremantle Dockers)

Taking out the second spot on Beacham’s list is Fremantle defender Karl Worner. Worner has seized the opportunity presented by Brandon Walker’s unfortunate concussion issues, stepping up to solidify his place in the Dockers’ backline.

Beacham commended Worner’s consistency and commitment to his role. “Karl plays every week; he’s durable. He does exactly what the coaching staff require of him,” Beacham said. “He’s a key holder in that Fremantle back six.” His reliability and adherence to team structures make him a vital component of Fremantle’s defence.

Brennan Cox (Fremantle Dockers)

Arguably the most underrated player on Beacham’s list, and a crucial figure for Fremantle, is key defender Brennan Cox. Having returned from a calf injury that sidelined him at the start of the season, Cox has demonstrated his immense value, particularly during Captain Alex Pearce’s recovery from an MCL injury. His contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2030, is a testament to his importance.

Beacham was effusive in his praise for Cox’s all-around defensive capabilities. “Brennan Cox is perhaps the most underrated player here for West Coast and Fremantle,” Beacham stated. “His ability to intercept, spoil, tackle, pressure… I know that Justin Longmuir and his coaching staff down there hold him in particularly high regard.” Cox’s consistent impact in crucial defensive actions makes him a linchpin for the Dockers’ success.

These players, while perhaps not always commanding headlines, are the engines that drive their teams forward. Their dedication, skill, and often unglamorous contributions are fundamental to the AFL landscape, proving that true footballing success is a collective effort built on the strength of every player on the field.
