Bezzecchi’s Mugello Sprint Struggles: A Costly First-Corner Error
Marco Bezzecchi is left rueing a critical miscalculation at the opening turn of the Italian Grand Prix sprint race, a mistake that significantly hampered his chances of a strong result and allowed rival Jorge Martin to eat into his MotoGP championship lead. Despite securing a commanding pole position at the iconic Mugello circuit, Bezzecchi found his aspirations dashed before the race truly got underway.
The Italian rider had shown promising form in Saturday morning’s qualifying, piloting his factory Aprilia to the top of the timesheets. This performance was a welcome sight after a string of challenging weekends, including being thoroughly outpaced by Martin at Le Mans and a less-than-stellar outing in Barcelona a fortnight prior. Bezzecchi’s return to the front row offered a glimmer of hope for a significant points haul.
However, the start of the sprint race proved to be Bezzecchi’s undoing. A misjudged braking point into the first corner saw him swallowed by the pack, plummeting as low as sixth position by the end of the opening lap. While he managed to fight back, repassing LCR rookie Diogo Moreira and the seasoned Marc Marquez in the subsequent laps, the initial error had cost him too much time and tyre life. Ultimately, he lacked the pace to challenge the podium finishers, crossing the line in a disappointing fourth place.
This result has tightened the championship battle considerably, with Martin now just 12 points adrift of Bezzecchi. The 27-year-old admitted to his frustration, acknowledging the pivotal nature of his early-race mistake.
“I simply braked too early in the first corner; it was a miscalculation,” Bezzecchi stated. “I wanted a little bit more. I didn’t expect anything, but it is true that when you start from pole position, you always would like to finish better. But, as I said, I made a mistake in the first corner, I lost many places, and immediately from that point I understood that the sprint was gone, so I tried to maximise everything with this error, and fourth place was the maximum I could do.”
Tyre Strategy and its Impact
The tyre choices made by the front-runners played a crucial role in the sprint race’s outcome. Both race winner Raul Fernandez and Jorge Martin opted for Michelin’s medium compound rear tyre. This strategic decision appeared to provide them with a distinct performance advantage over their rivals. Fabio di Giannantonio, who finished third, ran the softer compound and ended up over three seconds behind Fernandez, while Bezzecchi, also on the soft tyre, finished another second further back in fourth.
When questioned about his potential finishing position had he maintained the lead at the start, Bezzecchi was philosophical. “It’s impossible to say for sure. I think that the race was a bit worse because of the mistake in the first corner rather than the tyre choice. But you will never know, and I also will never know.”
Championship Pressure Mounts
Bezzecchi began the 2026 season in dominant fashion, securing three consecutive Grand Prix victories and establishing himself as the early championship favourite. However, a recent slump has seen him go three race weekends without a victory in either the main Grand Prix or the sprint race. This dip in form has allowed Jorge Martin to close the gap significantly, intensifying the pressure on Bezzecchi as the season progresses.
Looking Ahead to the Full Race
As the teams and riders turn their attention to Sunday’s full-distance 23-lap race at Mugello, Bezzecchi remains uncertain about the optimal tyre strategy. The longer race distance often necessitates a different approach, with tyre degradation becoming a more significant factor.
“With the longer race, the pace will be a little bit slower, so the soft has some clear advantage over the medium,” Bezzecchi explained. “For sure, it’s different to ride with the soft or with the medium. In the end, I’m not completely sure about the decision, but we will analyse everything as always in the box to try to make the best decision for us.” The team will be working diligently to ensure they make the right call to regain momentum and defend their championship lead.
