Former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is expected to be named as the new coach for Chelsea, only four months after he left the Spanish team, as reported on Saturday.
A Spanish player is said to have come to a preliminary agreement with the Premier League club and may be announced before Chelsea’s game against Tottenham on Tuesday, according to Britain’s Press Association.
Chelsea had not intended to appoint a permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior, who was let go last month, by the end of the season. Nevertheless, landing Alonso would be a significant achievement for the Blues, who have faced difficulties all season and lost 1-0 to Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
Alonso, aged 44, previously guided Bayer Leverkusen to their inaugural Bundesliga championship in the 2023/24 season, accomplishing this with a perfect record. His time at Real Madrid was short-lived, lasting only seven months before he was succeeded by Alvaro Arbeloa.
If verified, Alonso is set to be Chelsea’s fifth permanent manager since BlueCo assumed control of the club in 2022, after Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, Enzo Maresca, and Liam Rosenior.
