A Challenging Night for the Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs faced a tough night at the office against a revitalized Carlton side, and things took an even more difficult turn when key player Bailey Williams was forced to withdraw from the match in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury. The injury, which occurred high up on the back of his leg, is likely to keep the 28-year-old out for longer than usual, adding to the team’s woes.
With Williams sidelined, the Bulldogs struggled to maintain their momentum. They had been attempting to inject more speed into the game, a strategy that initially showed promise. However, this plan fell apart as Carlton seized control in the final quarter, scoring 5.3 to 2.2 and securing their first win since early March.
Coach Expresses Concerns Over Team Performance
Coach Luke Beveridge voiced his concerns about the team’s inability to secure contested possession without the likes of Williams, Cody Weightman, Sam Darcy, Tim English, and Tom Liberatore. The Bulldogs were heavily outclassed in this area, with a contested possession count of 140-109 in favor of Carlton.
“We can’t rely on the usual suspects to win that category in the columns,” Beveridge said after the loss. “We need more to be better at that side of it, so that’s part of our journey to progress in those facets. There are a number of boys who are finding their way with that.”
He emphasized that the gap in contested possession was one of the biggest discrepancies the team has faced in a long time. “Historically, there have been one or two players who have taken a lot of those contested possessions for us – one or two who aren’t in our team at the moment. Others need to pick up that vibe and that slack. Until they do, we’re going to be a bit vulnerable.”
Additional Setbacks at VFL Level
The Bulldogs’ challenges extended beyond the main game. Earlier in the day, they suffered a poor performance at the VFL level, losing to Carlton by 20 points. This result left Beveridge frustrated, as he pointed out the lack of selection pressure coming from the state-league side.
“We played a really disappointing game against Carlton at state-league level today as well,” he said. “We haven’t had a good day, and we’ve always been at our best when there’s been real competition for spots. That really isn’t there at the moment.”
Looking Ahead
With Williams set to undergo scans, the Bulldogs will now focus on recovering from this setback. They are preparing for a challenging match against the Melbourne Demons on Sunday, a game that the Demons have been dominating this season.
As the team looks to regroup and address their issues, the path forward will require stronger performances across the board, particularly in contested possession and overall team cohesion. The upcoming match against the Demons will be a crucial test of their ability to bounce back and adapt to the challenges ahead.
