The St George Illawarra Dragons have been making significant changes to their squad, particularly at the dummy half position. Damien Cook, a key player for the club, has revealed that he was “filthy” for several weeks after learning that his contract would not be extended. This decision came as part of a broader strategy by the Dragons to look towards younger talent and fresh perspectives.
Cook had been in negotiations with the club during the early stages of the season, but the situation took an unexpected turn when the Dragons decided to freeze internal contracts. This move coincided with the club’s decision to replace head coach Shane Flanagan, signaling a shift in direction for the team.

“Recruitment made it clear that they’re on the lookout for a couple of younger hookers,” Cook told the Sydney Morning Herald.
He explained that after repeated discussions with the club, he realized it was time to explore other opportunities. His manager was informed, and soon after, Ryan Carr from Castleford reached out to him.
A New Chapter for Cook
Cook viewed this as a great opportunity to start a new chapter in his career. He was excited about the chance to take his family to England and experience a different environment.
“I just saw it as a really good opportunity to change it up, take the family over there and go on a bit of an adventure. Carry’s sold ‘Cas Vegas’ [a nickname for Castleford] to me,” he said.
Despite his initial disappointment, Cook expressed gratitude for the time he spent with the Dragons. He admitted that he wanted to stay and was unhappy with the decision, but he understood the business side of the move.
“I definitely respected the business side of the thing, but obviously because I was involved in it, emotionally invested in it, there were definitely a tough couple of weeks where I was filthy at the decision,” Cook said.
However, he now feels positive about the future and is looking forward to finishing his season with the Dragons.

Cook will be starting for the Dragons in the final match of the magic round, where the winless club faces the red-hot Penrith Panthers. On paper, this could be one of the most one-sided matches in recent history.
Cook will finish his career with the Dragons before moving on to England, handing over the red and white number nine to Jacob Liddle. He emphasized that while he wanted to stay, the decision has been made, and he is now focused on helping the club finish the season well.
