Craig Foster Praises Sam Kerr’s Legacy at Chelsea
Craig Foster has expressed his admiration for Sam Kerr following her final match with Chelsea on Saturday night (AEST), revealing to Nine’s Today that Kerr’s next step in her football career is likely to be in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in America.
Kerr made history in her farewell game, securing a record as the joint all-time leading goal-scorer for Chelsea. She scored the only goal of the match, a stunning 33rd-minute volley, which helped secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. This goal marked her 115th in six and a half years with the club, cementing her status as one of the greatest legends in Chelsea’s history.
“She’s one of the greatest legends of the club,” Foster said to Today. “This was one of those games for Sam, where she scored her 115th goal in six and a half years for Chelsea.”
Foster also noted that Kerr’s move to the NWSL is expected, as she previously played in the league earlier in her career. He praised her consistent performances, highlighting that her incredible volley was something fans have become accustomed to, whether it was for the Matildas or for Chelsea.
“She’ll leave an absolute legend, with a standing ovation for her,” he added.
A Memorable Farewell

Kerr’s final appearance with Chelsea was filled with emotion. She arrived on the pitch with a smile, and she didn’t waste any time finding the back of the net. A long ball from Lauren James into the box found Kerr perfectly positioned, and she smashed the ball past the Manchester United goalkeeper.
The goal-scoring display was met with a loud roar from the crowd at Stamford Bridge, as it was confirmed that she had equalled Fran Kirby’s all-time goal-scoring record at Chelsea – 116 goals across all competitions.
Despite two more opportunities in the first half, neither shot was on target. Earlier in the game, Kerr was joined by her son Jagger on the pitch before the match, as the club celebrated the Australian superstar alongside captain Millie Bright.
A New Chapter Ahead
There has been much speculation about Kerr’s future in recent months, especially after she was linked to a potential move to the NWSL at the end of her contract with Chelsea.
In her farewell message to Chelsea fans, Kerr admitted there was “a little bit of sadness” to finally make the decision to leave the club. However, she reflected on how joyful her time at Chelsea had been.
Kerr has yet to announce where she will be playing next season, but her legacy at Chelsea is already secured. With five league titles, three FA Cups, and three league cups to her name, she has left an indelible mark on the club and its fans.
