Shubman Gill Condemns Fielding Errors After Defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders
Shubman Gill has spoken out about the fielding performance of Gujarat Titans following their 29-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. The defeat came after a high-scoring contest at Eden Gardens, where GT conceded 247 runs—the highest total ever scored against them in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In response, Gujarat ended their innings at 218 for 4.
Gill pointed to the missed opportunities in the field, particularly highlighting four dropped chances, including three regulation catches. These errors proved costly as Finn Allen, Cameron Green, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi all benefited from reprieves, helping KKR surpass the 240-run mark. After the match, Gill said:
“Looking at the wicket, we thought 200-220 was a par score. But we dropped too many catches and when you drop three to four catches in a game, it is never easy for the bowlers.”
Finn Allen’s Impact on the Game
Finn Allen was a key player in KKR’s victory, scoring 93 off just 35 balls. He was dropped twice during his innings, with Jason Holder missing a difficult chance at cover when Allen was on 14, and Mohammed Siraj spilling a straightforward opportunity at long-on when the batter was on 33. Allen went on to hit four boundaries and 10 sixes, maintaining a strike rate above 265.
Cameron Green also survived a close call when Arshad Khan dropped him on 23. Washington Sundar failed to hold a catch offered by Angkrish Raghuvanshi at fine leg. Both Green and Raghuvanshi finished with unbeaten half-centuries, contributing to KKR’s highest total of the season.
Gill acknowledged the quality of the pitch but expressed disappointment in the team’s fielding. He said:
“The pitch was good. The odd ball was stopping and sticking. We batted well to the score that we did (218 for 4). But our fielding could have been a lot better. We set a certain standard and dropping three sitters in a game like this, I don’t think we deserved to win this one.”
Gujarat Titans Remain Second in Points Table
Despite the loss, Gujarat Titans maintained their position in second place on the points table with 16 points. Gill downplayed the long-term impact of the result, suggesting that an off day before the knockout phase was preferable to one during the playoffs. He said:
“Best to have a game like this, 240-250 game, the bowling having an off day, a game like that now than in the qualifiers.”
GT will next face Chennai Super Kings at home in Ahmedabad on May 21, following a short recovery break after the defeat. The team will look to regroup and improve their fielding ahead of the crucial matches in the coming weeks.
