Injury Setback for Matheesha Pathirana in IPL 2026
Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lankan fast bowler, faced another injury setback during his first appearance for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The match against Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens was supposed to mark a significant return for Pathirana after he missed the first half of the tournament due to recurring fitness issues. However, his comeback was cut short when he suffered a calf injury on his left leg during his second over.
Pathirana came into the game as an Impact Player and showed promise with his pace and control in the first over, conceding just seven runs while consistently bowling at speeds over 145 kmph. His performance was encouraging, but the second over proved to be problematic. As he attempted to complete his run-up, Pathirana stopped abruptly after delivering two balls, clutching his left calf in pain. This sudden injury immediately raised concerns among the KKR team.
The KKR physio rushed onto the field, and the rest of the players gathered around to support the 21-year-old. Initially, Pathirana tried to continue playing, taking a short jog in place and receiving encouragement from KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane. However, it became clear that the injury was serious, and he eventually walked off the field. This incident is a major blow for KKR, who have already struggled with their pace attack this season.
Continued Fitness Issues for Pathirana
This latest injury is not the first time Pathirana has faced fitness challenges. He had previously suffered a similar calf injury during the T20 World Cup 2026, and Sri Lanka Cricket’s medical team has been monitoring him closely since then. There were reports that Sri Lanka Cricket did not grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for Pathirana to participate in the IPL due to concerns about his premature return. KKR had invested INR 18 crore in Pathirana for the tournament, hoping he would strengthen their pace attack in the latter half of the season.
The absence of Pathirana, along with other bowlers like Harshit Rana, has often been a weakness for KKR. Now, with a calf injury occurring almost immediately after his return, doubts are being raised about whether his rehabilitation was premature. Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to keep a close watch on the pacer’s condition.
KKR Overcomes Injury Setback with Strong Batting Performance
Despite the injury scare involving Pathirana, KKR delivered a dominant batting performance earlier in the evening. Finn Allen played a crucial role, scoring an impressive 93 runs off just 35 balls, including 10 sixes, to set the tone for the innings. Angkrish Raghuvanshi remained unbeaten on 82 off 44 balls, while Cameron Green contributed with an unbeaten 52 off 38 balls. Together, they helped KKR post a formidable total of 247/2.
Gujarat Titans also faced their own injury concerns during the match. Opener Sai Sudharsan was struck on the elbow by Kartik Tyagi and was forced to retire hurt after scoring 23 off 13 balls. This added to the challenges the team faced in their pursuit of the target.
