Cycology Cycling Club Champions Road Safety and Community Support in Lagos
The Cycology Cycling Club, a vibrant community of cycling enthusiasts in Lagos, has once again underscored its dedication to social responsibility and the enhancement of road safety through its impactful ‘Love on the Sidewalk’ initiative. This year, the club extended its generous support to 300 road sweepers, recognising their indispensable role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the city’s thoroughfares.
The annual initiative, a cornerstone of the club’s advocacy efforts, saw the distribution of 300 thoughtfully prepared gift boxes. These boxes were laden with essential dry food items, distributed to road sweepers working diligently across key areas including Bourdillon, Dolphin, Osborne, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), and Oworo. This gesture serves as a powerful acknowledgement of the vital contribution these individuals make to ensuring that Lagos’s streets are not only clean but also safe for all users, with a particular emphasis on the cycling community.
A Commitment to Clean and Safe Streets
The ‘Love on the Sidewalk’ initiative is specifically designed to express appreciation and offer tangible support to the road sweepers. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly, often under challenging conditions, to keep the city’s roads free from debris and hazards. Their efforts directly contribute to a safer environment for everyone, including cyclists who rely on clear and unobstructed pathways.
Leadership and Vision Behind the Initiative
The successful execution of this year’s outreach was spearheaded by Dolu Olugbenjo, the club’s dedicated Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) secretary. Her leadership was instrumental in coordinating the complex logistics involved in reaching a significant number of beneficiaries across multiple locations.
Speaking at one of the distribution points, Kunle Osunkunle, the captain of the Cycology Cycling Club, eloquently articulated the intrinsic connection between road cleanliness and overall safety. He highlighted the potential dangers that accumulate when streets are not properly maintained. “You can imagine if those streets are not cleaned, what would happen is that we’d have all sorts of danger on the road,” Osunkunle stated. He further emphasised the daily commitment of the sweepers, noting, “These ladies and men every day are on the road cleaning the roads and making the roads better and safer for us to cycle. This initiative is our way of saying thank you.”
Osunkunle also touched upon the growth and sustainability of the initiative, attributing its success to the unwavering financial contributions of the club’s members and the crucial support of strategic corporate partners. He expressed an ambitious outlook for the future, stating, “What we can do is how do we lighten the burden for them, which is why we do this. We’ve done 300 this year; there’s no reason why we cannot do 1,000 next year.” This vision underscores a commitment to scaling up their efforts and impacting even more lives in the years to come.
A Heartfelt Connection with Beneficiaries
The vice-captain of the club, Yejide Taiwo, shared insights into the profound emotional resonance of the initiative for the Cycology Cycling Club. “The road sweepers’ initiative is a very dear initiative to Cycology,” Taiwo remarked, illustrating the deep personal investment the club members have in this cause.
She elaborated on the collaborative spirit that defines the effort: “Every year, our members and sponsors come together and we make these beautiful big boxes full of goodies to give to them as a way of saying thank you for all they have been doing.” Taiwo recounted the heartwarming reception from the sweepers, describing a scene of mutual joy and appreciation. “As we were getting to the locations, we just kept hearing them chanting and singing ‘Cycology, we love you.’ They were praising us and we were also happy and we danced with them. For me, that was very touching and very inspiring.” This exchange highlights the powerful human connection fostered by the initiative, moving beyond mere material support to create genuine moments of shared happiness and mutual respect.
Gratitude from the Frontlines
The impact of the ‘Love on the Sidewalk’ initiative was powerfully articulated by one of its beneficiaries, Idris Mustapha Opeyemi. Having dedicated his services as a road sweeper since 2020, Opeyemi conveyed his sincere gratitude for the club’s thoughtful outreach. His words serve as a testament to the meaningful difference such community-driven efforts can make in the lives of those who work diligently to keep the city running smoothly.
