PDP Engages in High-Level Diplomacy to Resolve Internal Crisis
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of Tanimu Turaki, has initiated significant diplomatic efforts to address its ongoing internal strife. These high-level engagements aim to forge a path towards lasting reconciliation and unity within the party. The announcement follows a two-day emergency consultative meeting convened in Abuja, where party leaders convened to assess the state of reconciliation initiatives.
Mr. Turaki elaborated on the party’s strategy, stating that feuding factions are actively exploring a variety of avenues to achieve a definitive resolution to the crisis. This concerted push for reconciliation was reportedly spurred by an advisory from the Court of Appeal in Ibadan. The court recommended that the PDP pursue an out-of-court settlement, a move intended to allow the involved parties to engage in genuine reconciliation. The ultimate goal is to extricate the PDP from further discord and establish a stable platform for aspirants seeking to contest in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Committee Formed to Engage Estranged Members
In line with the court’s suggestion, the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), chaired by Adolphus Wabara, has established a dedicated committee. This committee is tasked with the crucial role of interfacing with members who have become estranged from the party. Their mandate is to foster dialogue and bridge the divides that have emerged.
Demonstrating a commitment to good faith negotiations, Mr. Turaki’s National Working Committee (NWC) has taken the proactive step of postponing scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Caucus meetings. This decision signals a willingness to prioritize reconciliation efforts over routine party administrative functions.
“We also de-escalated combative communication on all fronts,” Mr. Turaki stated. He expressed disappointment, however, that this de-escalation was not met with a reciprocal gesture. “While we expected a reciprocal gesture, what we have witnessed instead is the weaponisation of hurtful rhetoric and the issuance of derogatory statements,” he lamented.
Despite these challenges, party leaders remain acutely aware of the profound implications of the ongoing dispute. Mr. Turaki appealed to the opposing group to prioritize the overarching interests of the PDP. “I can unequivocally confirm that as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways toward a lasting resolution,” he affirmed.
Call for De-escalation and Reassurance for Supporters
Mr. Turaki issued a direct appeal to PDP supporters nationwide, urging them to immediately cease any high-tempered communications and actions. He stressed the importance of such de-escalation to avoid jeopardizing the delicate peace efforts currently underway.
He also provided reassurance to PDP members regarding the party’s participation in the 2027 general elections. Mr. Turaki confirmed that the PDP would field candidates for all elective offices, adhering strictly to Article 6(2) of the PDP Constitution, 2017, as amended. “Let me reassure Nigerians that the PDP is alive and will participate in the forthcoming elections, offering a credible platform for robust political contests at all levels so that power may truly return to the people,” he declared.
Willingness to Make Sacrifices for Peace
Addressing concerns about the numerous ongoing litigations, Mr. Turaki expressed his camp’s readiness to make significant sacrifices to ensure the success of the reconciliation process. “As soon as we reach agreeable terms, we will willingly withdraw all cases, whether at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal or Supreme Court, to give peace a chance. All cases will give way for peace as soon as we reach that point,” he promised.
He emphasized the party’s commitment to compromise, stating, “On the issue of compromise, we are willing to bend as far as our necks and backs allow. We are ready to make all sorts of sacrifices in the overall interest of the party. PDP will not die.”
Mr. Turaki acknowledged the presence of individuals attempting to disrupt the peace process, referring to them as “spoilers.” He noted that these disruptive elements had been identified during discussions held on Tuesday night. He encouraged Nigerians to continue registering through the party’s e-registration portal, asserting that the PDP’s “internal shock absorbers” would ensure its emergence as a stronger force ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Vote of Confidence in Key Governors
During the NWC meeting, a unanimous vote of confidence was passed in Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. This vote recognized their resilience and steadfast leadership in navigating recent challenges faced by the party.
It is important to note the political context of the PDP’s internal dynamics, particularly the support for a faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Mr. Wike, a member of the PDP, currently holds a ministerial position within the APC-led federal government, a situation that adds a layer of complexity to the party’s internal reconciliation efforts.
