Nigerian Monarchs Tasked with Pivotal Role in National Security and Unity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a significant call to action for Nigeria’s traditional rulers, urging them to actively intensify their involvement in tackling the nation’s pervasive security challenges and fostering unity across its diverse communities. The President emphasized that the role of these revered leaders extends far beyond ceremonial duties. He posited that royal fathers must increasingly serve as crucial stabilising forces within their respective domains, strategically leveraging their considerable influence to cultivate peaceful coexistence and reinforce the fabric of social cohesion.
This imperative was articulated by President Tinubu on Thursday in Lagos during a distinguished event marking the launch of the autobiography of His Royal Highness, Oba (Dr) Samuel Oluyemisi Olu Falae. Speaking through his representative, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, President Tinubu underscored the urgent need for the nation’s royal fathers to rise to the demands of the present moment. He urged them to position themselves as frontline agents of peacebuilding and instrumental pillars of grassroots stability.
“Peace and security are not solely the responsibility of government; they are collective duties,” the President declared, making a direct appeal to monarchs to champion dialogue, actively discourage the propagation of violence, and steadfastly strengthen cohesion within their spheres of influence.
The gathering, which attracted a constellation of political leaders, fellow traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic corps, was framed by President Tinubu as an occasion of profound significance. He presented it not merely as a ceremonial book launch, but as a reflective platform to contemplate leadership, dedicated service, and the enduring national values that Oba Falae demonstrably embodies.
A Legacy of Dual Service: Tradition and Modern Governance
President Tinubu eloquently described Oba Falae as an exemplary figure, a “bridge between tradition and modern governance.” He lauded the monarch’s distinguished legacy across public service, economic management, and cultural leadership. The President highlighted Falae’s multifaceted career, from his impactful stewardship as Nigeria’s Finance Minister to his current esteemed position as the Olu-Abo of Ilu-Abo in Ondo State. This trajectory, Tinubu noted, represents a rare and commendable fusion of technocratic discipline with the deep-rooted authority inherent in traditional leadership.
Tinubu specifically drew attention to Falae’s tenure in government, characterising it as a period marked by unwavering fiscal prudence and remarkable policy clarity. He affirmed that Falae’s contributions were instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s economic framework during periods of critical national importance. Furthermore, the President acknowledged Falae’s significant leadership role within the Afenifere socio-cultural organisation, where he has held the distinguished position of Chairman of the National Executive Committee since 2025.
Traditional Institutions: Indispensable Pillars of Governance
The President emphatically stressed the enduring and indispensable nature of traditional institutions within the broader framework of governance. This is particularly pertinent, he argued, at a time when the nation is grappling with heightened security challenges and the unsettling specter of social fragmentation.
“Our royal fathers are the closest link between government and the grassroots,” President Tinubu asserted. “Your palaces must remain centres of peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and moral guidance.” This statement positions traditional rulers not just as custodians of culture, but as active participants in the vital work of national development and stability.
He offered a firm assurance that his administration remains committed to strengthening its collaborative efforts with traditional institutions. This commitment translates into a pledge for increased engagement in multifaceted initiatives aimed at enhancing security, fostering social harmony, and driving grassroots development across the country.
An Autobiography: A Mirror to Nigeria’s Journey
President Tinubu also underscored the profound symbolic weight of Oba Falae’s autobiography. He described the book as a dual narrative: a deeply personal chronicle and, simultaneously, a revealing mirror reflecting Nigeria’s own arduous journey through periods of immense trial and remarkable resilience. He expressed his conviction that the book offers invaluable lessons for younger generations, imparting wisdom on the virtues of perseverance, unwavering patriotism, and unwavering integrity.
Concluding his remarks, the President extended his sincere congratulations to Oba Falae on the successful publication of his autobiography. He voiced his fervent hope that the monarch’s enduring legacy would continue to serve as a potent source of inspiration for current and future leaders of Nigeria.
