Renewed Hope for a Democratic and Prosperous Bangladesh Under New Leadership
Dhaka, Bangladesh – March 26 – A palpable sense of optimism is sweeping across Bangladesh as the nation marks its 56th Independence and National Day. The Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has expressed strong confidence that the country is poised to achieve a new era of democracy, happiness, and prosperity under the guidance of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Speaking to reporters following a solemn tribute at the graves of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Mr. Alamgir conveyed the widespread hope and unwavering trust that citizens place in Prime Minister Rahman’s leadership. “The people across the country are very hopeful and have strong confidence in Tarique Rahman,” he stated. “Under his leadership, we believe that Bangladesh will surely become a democratic, happy, and prosperous country.”
Mr. Alamgir, who also holds the portfolio of Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, extended Independence Day greetings on behalf of the BNP, acknowledging the unique context in which this year’s celebrations are being held. He reflected on the nation’s enduring struggle for democracy, noting that despite facing significant repression and hardships, the people’s spirit remained unbroken. He highlighted the “July mass uprising” as a pivotal moment that paved the way for the rebuilding of a democratic system.
The BNP leader emphasized Prime Minister Rahman’s pivotal role in steering the party and the nation. Having led the BNP from abroad for many years, Mr. Rahman is now actively engaged in revitalizing the country with a forward-thinking vision. “He has already taken Bangladesh a long way forward under his leadership in just one month,” Mr. Alamgir remarked, underscoring the swift and impactful changes already initiated.
The government, under Prime Minister Rahman’s direction, has already launched several key initiatives aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens and fostering economic stability. These include:
- Introduction of Family Cards: These cards are designed to streamline the distribution of essential goods and services, ensuring that aid reaches those who need it most.
- Allowances for Imams and Religious Leaders: Recognizing the vital role of religious figures in communities, the government has implemented a program to provide them with financial allowances.
- Canal Excavation Programmes: These initiatives are crucial for improving irrigation, water management, and agricultural productivity, particularly in rural areas.
- Interest Waivers for Marginal Farmers: To alleviate the financial burden on small-scale farmers, the government has introduced measures to waive interest on agricultural loans, promoting their sustainability and growth.
The ceremony at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar began with Mr. Alamgir paying profound respect to the BNP’s founder, Ziaur Rahman. He recalled Ziaur Rahman’s historic declaration of independence, an act that galvanized the Bangladeshi people and inspired them to participate in the Liberation War. Mr. Alamgir acknowledged that Ziaur Rahman, at the head of the patriotic armed forces, led the nation through nine months of intense conflict to achieve its hard-won independence.
On behalf of the BNP, Mr. Alamgir also paid homage to all the martyrs of the Liberation War, as well as to those who endured suffering and injury during the conflict. He further extended profound tribute to former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, recognizing her significant contributions to the advancement of democracy in Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman himself paid his respects at the graves, first in his capacity as head of government and subsequently as the Chairman of the BNP. He was accompanied by senior party leaders during these solemn observances.
The commemorative events concluded with a munajat (supplication), led by the Prime Minister and party leaders, seeking divine blessings for the departed souls of Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia, and for the continued well-being and prosperity of Bangladesh and its people.
