Trump Demands Judge Face Charges Over Kennedy Center Ruling

Former President Donald Trump has launched a blistering attack on a federal judge, demanding that U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper face charges following a ruling that temporarily blocked Trump’s plans to renovate and rename the Kennedy Center. The public broadside, delivered via Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, saw the former President unleash a lengthy tirade against the judge and his wife.

Judge Cooper’s decision on Friday sided with arguments that the Kennedy Center’s original statute clearly designates it to bear the name of President John F. Kennedy and that only Congress has the authority to alter this designation. The ruling also temporarily halted Trump’s proposed renovations and ordered the removal of his name from the building.

“The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so,” Cooper stated in his ruling. “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”

Trump, however, dismissed the judge’s reasoning, making personal accusations. He suggested the ruling was influenced by the judge’s wife, Amy Jeffress, whom Trump labelled a “Radical Left Democrat” with a supposed conflict of interest. He claimed Jeffress, a former federal prosecutor and counselor to Obama Attorney General Eric Holder, deliberately concealed her political affiliations to avoid scrutiny.

“Cooper’s wife, Amy Jeffress, who doesn’t use the ‘Cooper’ name because they, as a couple, don’t want people to know that she has a Conflict of Interest with an important Judge, is a Radical Left Democrat, who worked as a Federal Prosecutor and Counselor to Obama Attorney General, Eric Holder,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump went on to argue that this alleged conflict of interest should lead to Cooper being brought up on charges for failing to disclose these facts. He asserted that the situation made it impossible for him to receive a fair hearing.

“Amy is totally wired into the Left System, from her husband down, and it is impossible for me to be treated fairly. He has a total Conflict of Interest, and should be brought up on charges for not revealing these facts,” Trump declared. He grimly predicted that the Kennedy Center would soon be closed, “probably never to open again” as a consequence of the ruling.

A Dire Picture of the Kennedy Center

In his extensive Truth Social post, Trump painted a dire and exaggerated picture of the Kennedy Center’s condition, describing it as a dilapidated structure on the verge of collapse.

“The Kennedy Center is broken, unsafe, and $busted, and has been for many years!” Trump stated. He claimed the building was “in a potential state of collapse, rusted, rotted, and rat and bug infested.” He further elaborated on the alleged disrepair:

  • The marble is described as being in “terrible shape.”
  • The pipes are said to be “gone.”
  • The air conditioning and heating systems are reportedly 65 years old and no longer functioning.

Trump detailed his plans for a comprehensive renovation, which included replacing the outdated systems with “brand new Carrier Equipment, at the highest standard.” He lamented that this crucial work would now be stalled because of Judge Cooper’s decision.

“The marble is in terrible shape, the pipes are gone, the air conditioning and heating systems are 65 years old, and no longer functioning. It was all being torn out to be replaced by brand new Carrier Equipment, at the highest standard,” Trump said of his plans.

He continued, expressing frustration that the renovation would be stalled “because a Judge, whose wife is an anti Trump Hater, and he is too, decided, unprecedentedly, to not allow a desperately needed Building Renovation to go forward.”

Board’s Decision and Trump’s Name

Trump also took issue with the judge’s directive to remove his name from the building, highlighting that a unanimous vote by a distinguished Board of Trustees had approved the renaming. He claimed his name was added to the building by this Board, which he had appointed after dismissing the previous one. This newly appointed Board, which included prominent figures like White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scovino, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, the wife of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trump himself, had chosen to add his name.

“On top of that, he said, ‘Rip his name off the Building, he’s got 20 days to do so,’ even though a large Board of some of the most distinguished people in the Country voted unanimously to put the name up. I didn’t do it, the Board did because they thought it would be good for this dying Institution,” Trump said.

He reiterated his belief that the Kennedy Center was structurally and financially doomed, stating, “So now, the Kennedy Center will collapse, both structurally and financially.”

Calls for Impeachment

Trump escalated his rhetoric by demanding that Judge Cooper be “IMPEACHED.” He drew a parallel between Cooper and other judges presiding over his legal cases, whom he collectively labelled as “Crooked Judges.”

“Judge Cooper, like numerous other Crooked Judges on my cases, should be IMPEACHED,” he wrote.

Kennedy Center’s Response and Appeal

The controversy has already had repercussions, with over a dozen major acts reportedly cancelling performances at the Kennedy Center in protest of the renaming.

In response to the judge’s ruling, the Kennedy Center announced its intention to appeal. Roma Daravai, the Kennedy Center’s Vice President of Public Relations, acknowledged the need for urgent restoration, stating, “We will review the decision carefully though the reality remains — the Center requires an urgent and significant restoration – a truth that even the plaintiff acknowledges.”

Daravai confirmed that the necessary funding, amounting to $257 million secured by Trump and approved by Congress, was in place. The Center remains committed to exploring all legal avenues to ensure the “Trump Kennedy Center” is restored as a national cultural landmark.
