A congressional candidate in Hawaii has been arrested and charged with a serious offence after an alarming incident involving county workers and a firearm. Kirill Basin, a Democrat vying for a seat in the US Congress, allegedly held county employees at gunpoint within a Maui County government building on Friday.
The Honolulu Civil Beat reported that the confrontation unfolded during an argument, during which Basin brandished a weapon. While police were not alerted for approximately ninety minutes following the incident, the Maui Police Department subsequently arrested Basin. He faces charges of “terroristic threatening in the first degree.”
Maui Police Chief John Pelletier underscored the severity of the situation, stating, “The Maui Police Department will not compromise public safety, and incidents of this nature are taken extremely seriously.”
Reports indicate that Basin’s actions on Friday were preceded by a period of erratic behaviour. Prior to his arrest, police had escorted him from a town hall meeting. Furthermore, on the very same day, his executive assistant had sought and been granted a restraining order against him.
The executive assistant, Jared Agtunong, initiated the restraining order due to what he described as a barrage of harassing and profane communications from Basin. Agtunong detailed the nature of these communications, which included threatening voicemails and text messages.
“I did not answer Basin’s phone call, but he left a message telling me that I’m a piece of trash, said I should think of my family,” Agtunong recounted. “Basin wished me luck with prison, then at 9 p.m., Basin’s text said ‘you’re f—–.’”
This incident has cast a shadow over Basin’s political aspirations and raises significant concerns about his fitness for public office. The legal proceedings are ongoing, and the community awaits further developments in this disturbing case.
