A Political Titan: Nyesom Wike’s Complex Legacy
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been a central figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the past three years. The question of whether one is with him or against him has become a defining issue within the party.
Wike is often described as bold, brave, sagacious, and courageous. He is seen by some as a rugged fighter, while others view him as strong-willed. Many perceive him as grandiosely loquacious. His personality is complex, marked by focus, principled behavior, gregariousness, and a reputation for being “wicked,” as noted by the late Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu.
As a politician, Wike is a crowd puller. His supporters see him as a kind leader, a dependable arrowhead, and an impatient, no-nonsense actor. He is known for his work ethic, meticulous planning, and gift for organization. Wike is a pragmatic and result-driven politician, serving as a mentor and role model to many young political aspirants. He is a significant figure in political study.
Observers are often caught in an ambivalence of emotion when it comes to Wike. This may stem from his contrasting personality and situational adaptability. He understands the grammar of politics and knows how to form alliances that sustain partisan interests. He values friendship but has a low tolerance for betrayal and adversity. His caustic tongue can be venomous, especially when dealing with rivals.
His friends, particularly those he rescued during difficult times, have a different perspective. Wike has used his incumbency power and immunity to support associates in distress, such as Ayo Fayose. He has also helped acquaintances across the country, ensuring their political success. However, when those beneficiaries turn their backs on him, he becomes bitter and seeks retribution.
In the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Wike is the apple of the President’s eye due to his impressive track record. As governor of the nation’s capital, he is the landlord and host to the Federal Government. Yet, he is also the National Leader of the PDP, which is divided over his proposed support for the Commander-in-Chief in next year’s poll. While not the architect of the party’s crisis, he is at the center of the controversy.
In Rivers, his main political base, Wike is both a unifying and divisive factor. He is a skilled communicator, able to rehearse his points before any public presentation, making it difficult to fault his explanations. He is endowed with verbal facility and acumen.
The minister has exhibited the qualities of a goal getter in politics. He uses incisive wit, fidelity to a cause, determination, and fearlessness in the face of obstacles. His political life is characterized by achievement orientation, confidence, vigour, and skill in negotiation, persuasion, social rebellion, and strategic vengeance.
If psychologists could unravel his upbringing, they might find that childhood experiences shaped his adult behavior. A combination of hereditary, parental guidance, and environmental influences likely contributed to his rare resilience. Since he put his hands on the plough, he has not looked back, driven by toughness, tenacity, and a positive mindset.
Unlike many politicians, Wike has a second address as a lawyer. He sees political involvement as a vocation rather than an occupation. The law is always to his advantage, as he leans on it to regulate political relationships. He operates within legal boundaries, which accounts for his consistent triumphs in the temple of justice.
Wike chose politics, exercising his fundamental rights, and started paying his dues as a faithful follower. He began at the grassroots, identifying with his cradle, which later found him suitable for the position of chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. He hit the ground running, focusing on infrastructural development, becoming a household name in Rivers and beyond.
He built networks early, recognizing the importance of intra-party structure. He presented himself as a risk taker in seeking political power, never afraid of stumbling but always rising after a critical fall. Wike became the face of the struggle for power in Rivers when outgoing Governor Peter Odili’s succession plan was about to crumble.
Afterwards, Wike played a key role in Amaechi’s government as Chief of Staff, proving to be effective, firm, and calculating. He served loyally for four years until fate catapulted him to the FEC as Minister of State for Education, and later as Acting Minister.
In 2015, he was clearly the most outstanding politician to succeed Amaechi. He vowed to surpass his predecessor’s achievements, becoming a governor of infrastructural development and leaving many completed projects as legacies.
However, his endorsement of Siminalayi Fubara proved an albatross, leading to cracks within the state. Despite this, Wike stood his ground on equity, fairness, and justice, advocating for power rotation from the upland to the lowland of Rivers.
Yet, he could not get the PDP to adopt presidential zoning from the North to the South in 2023, as northern chieftains bullied their southern counterparts. Although promised the vice presidential slot, it was not fulfilled. This mistake marked the beginning of the protracted crisis in the party.
While not calling it quits with the PDP, Wike tilted support to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Asiwaju Tinubu, during the 2023 poll. This commitment to zoning is part of the reasons he continues to support the President’s re-election bid.
Outside power, Wike would have been vulnerable, his saving grace being the President. If not appointed a minister, he may have been run out of town, fighting fruitlessly for space and relevance in a state he governed for eight years.
Another lesson is that the minister has managed to keep his followers intact despite the onslaught against his structure. He faces a huge battle at home, big hurdles in Abuja, and a real war in the PDP. He is unmovable in Rivers, controlling the swinging of the pendulum in Abuja and being the undisputed Leader in the PDP.
Now in Rivers, he is curiously acknowledged not only as the towering political leader but as the leader of the PDP and APC. That underscores Wike’s exceptionality as a political warrior.
Ahead of the 2027 general election, Wike is poised to play a significant role for the ruling party and the main opposition. He has the clout and does not appear fatigued to rally support and fight hard, wherever and whenever necessary. This ability to open his arms for camaraderie and throw the jabs against aggression makes Wike a unique figure in today’s national polity.
