Land Dispute Erupts in Violence, Claiming One Life and Injuring Ten
A violent clash over government-owned land in Nasirnagar upazila, Brahmanbaria, has resulted in the death of one individual and left at least ten others, including women and children, injured. The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon, highlights the persistent tensions surrounding land ownership and disputes in the region.
The confrontation took place around 3:00 PM in the Lomba Hati area of Khagalia village, within Bholakut Union. The deceased has been identified as Bashir Mia, a 55-year-old resident of the same village. The injured victims include Karima Akter, Chanbanu, Asheda Akter, Khairunnesa, Saima Akter, Putul Akter, Nurunnahar Begum, Taslima Begum, Julhas Mia, and another individual named Bashir Mia.
Roots of the Conflict: A Long-Standing Land Dispute
According to accounts from local residents and the family of the deceased, the incident stems from a protracted dispute between two factions over the control of government-owned “khas” land. This type of land, typically managed by the government, is often a point of contention when individuals or groups seek to claim possession.
The immediate catalyst for the violence appears to have been the actions of a man identified as Alamgir Mia. He recently asserted his claim over a parcel of this government land, reportedly stating that he had legally acquired it from the authorities. His subsequent efforts to demarcate the boundaries of the land ignited a heated argument with members of an opposing group, identified as the Kutub Bari faction. This verbal altercation rapidly escalated into a physical confrontation, with both sides allegedly resorting to the use of locally manufactured weapons.
The Fatal Confrontation and Its Aftermath
During the ensuing melee, Bashir Mia sustained critical injuries. He was promptly transported to the Nasirnagar Upazila Health Complex, where medical professionals regrettably pronounced him dead.
Khairunnesa, the niece of the deceased, provided a distressing account of the events. She alleged that Alamgir Mia and his supporters initiated an attack on the women of their family when they attempted to resist what they perceived as an unlawful takeover of the land. According to her statement, Bashir Mia intervened when he heard the commotion, attempting to protect the women, and was subsequently strangled.
Official Response and Ongoing Investigation
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nasirnagar Police Station, Shahinur Islam, confirmed that the clash was indeed related to pre-existing disputes and the contentious government land. He acknowledged that one person had lost their life and several others had sustained injuries.
In response to the incident, law enforcement authorities have deployed police personnel to the affected area to restore and maintain order. The body of Bashir Mia is scheduled to be transferred to the Brahmanbaria District Hospital morgue for an autopsy. The OC further stated that legal proceedings are being prepared, and authorities are in the process of identifying all individuals involved in the violence. The investigation aims to bring those responsible to justice and address the underlying issues that led to this tragic outcome. The situation remains tense as the community grapples with the loss of life and the ongoing ramifications of the land dispute.
