Windhoek City Council Charts Course for Enhanced Service Delivery
The City of Windhoek has officially commenced its new term with its inaugural council meeting, marking a pivotal moment for local governance and resident engagement. Newly elected Mayor, His Worship Sakarias Uunona, has articulated a clear vision centered on fostering robust and unified leadership, directly addressing the mandate entrusted to the council by the city’s residents and stakeholders.
Mayor Uunona underscored his dedication to this vision, highlighting the proactive steps taken by the council immediately following their swearing-in. A comprehensive three-day pre-induction onboarding exercise was conducted in December. This preparatory phase was instrumental in setting the stage for the subsequent, more intensive induction and team-building workshop held in January.
This crucial January workshop was specifically designed to equip all council members, with a particular emphasis on those newly elected, with the necessary tools and knowledge to serve the residents of Windhoek with utmost effectiveness. The council’s foundational objective, from its very inception, is to achieve efficient and impactful service delivery across all sectors of the city.
“The induction workshop proved fruitful as it equipped leadership with a holistic understanding of the City of Windhoek’s operations and further embedded a culture of teamwork and collective responsibility,” Mayor Uunona stated, emphasizing the positive outcomes of the intensive training. This collaborative approach is seen as vital for navigating the complexities of municipal administration and ensuring that all council members are aligned in their purpose.
Looking ahead, the commitment to continuous development and a deeper understanding of local governance structures remains paramount. Council members are slated to participate in a ministerial induction workshop scheduled to take place from March 2nd to March 6th in Otjiwarongo.
This upcoming workshop is designed to serve as a critical platform for council members. It will provide them with an invaluable opportunity to cultivate a profound understanding of the intricate local governance systems and their inherent dynamics. The objective is to significantly strengthen their knowledge base, ensuring they possess a comprehensive grasp of critical factors influencing municipal operations. Furthermore, this will facilitate a strong alignment with the strategic intentions and directives of the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, thereby ensuring that Windhoek’s local governance operates in harmony with broader national development goals.
The council’s strategic approach, characterized by immediate onboarding, intensive team-building, and a commitment to ongoing professional development, signals a strong intent to address the needs of Windhoek’s citizens proactively. The focus remains firmly on translating mandates into tangible improvements in the quality of life and services provided to all residents and stakeholders. This deliberate and structured approach aims to build a foundation of competence, collaboration, and accountability, essential for steering Windhoek towards a future of sustained progress and effective governance.
