A Historic Visit to Ogun State

President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Ogun State was a momentous occasion that highlighted the remarkable progress being made in the region. The atmosphere in Abeokuta, the state capital, was electric with excitement and anticipation. As the President toured the state, he commissioned several landmark projects, showcasing the transformative work being done under Governor Dapo Abiodun’s leadership.

The visit came at a crucial time for the President, who had recently returned from Plateau State, where he witnessed the devastating effects of terrorism. This experience left him deeply affected, and he vowed to address the security challenges facing the nation. However, his trip to Ogun State provided a much-needed respite, offering a glimpse into the potential of visionary leadership and effective governance.

A State on the Rise

Before the President’s arrival, the mood in Ogun State was one of immense excitement. Billboards across the state announced the visit, but more importantly, the people were filled with gratitude for a government that was actively working to improve their lives. Social media was flooded with images of modern hospitals, renovated roads, and the state-of-the-art Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, all of which were set to be commissioned by the President.

Young men and women shared their plans to sell various products, reflecting the optimism and entrepreneurial spirit prevalent in the state. Governor Abiodun had been busy rolling out infrastructure projects across Ogun, focusing on economic corridors and connectivity. Between January and February, he commissioned several key roads, including the Abeokuta–Obalende Road and the Sagamu–Ayepe Road, among others. These projects were selected through community-driven prioritisation, ensuring that the needs of the people were met.

A Showcase of Development

As the President arrived in Ogun, he was greeted by a range of life-changing projects. In the aviation and transport sector, he commissioned the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport and launched the state’s new airline, Gateway Airline, along with two newly acquired aircraft. The President also inaugurated logistics and trade infrastructure, including a N73bn hub for the Nigeria Customs Service, featuring a residential barracks, training college, warehouse, and hospital.

Additionally, he launched mobility, security, and agriculture assets, such as 1,000 electric motorcycles and 80 units of security vehicles. The event attracted a wide array of dignitaries, including the Senate President, governors from various states, former presidents, and business leaders.

A Message of Hope and Progress

During his speech, President Tinubu expressed his appreciation for the governor’s vision and commitment to national development. He praised the use of federal allocations to build the country and commended the people of Ogun for their support of a government delivering measurable progress. He emphasized that his “Renewed Hope” Reforms were already increasing resources to states, enabling them to fund projects effectively.

Governor Abiodun, in turn, lauded the President’s reforms, including foreign exchange unification and fuel subsidy removal. He highlighted the state’s achievements, such as the rise in Ogun IGR from N40bn to N250bn and GDP from N4tn to N17tn in seven years. He also spoke about the Gateway International Airport, built from ground zero, and its role as an aerotropolis.

A Vision for the Future

Abiodun outlined the state’s Building Our Future Together agenda, which focuses on closing the infrastructure gap and leveraging proximity to Lagos. He mentioned the construction of 1,600km of roads, the establishment of healthcare centers, and the provision of affordable housing. Additionally, he highlighted the state’s efforts in agriculture, including the provision of modern tractors and law enforcement vehicles.

In his closing remarks, President Tinubu expressed his deep satisfaction with the progress in Ogun State. He acknowledged Governor Abiodun’s focus and consistency, stating that development is about decisions that improve lives. He concluded with a powerful message: “Our investment is about our people. Today’s foundation is for tomorrow’s prosperity.”
